Ahh are your drivers installed correctly?

Are you using a virtual drive?

Everything was working fine until I installed XFire (which is now uninstalled) around the end of last week.

Im running SP hoping that something needs to be written in order for MP to work.

Edit: Nope.. still crashes to desktop when joining an MP game.

Are you updated to patch 1.2?

Yup. As I said I was playing with everyone just fine up until late last week when I installed XFire.

I might be forced to reinstall

Try a few different servers. I've noticed there's a couple servers that almost always boot me to the desktop as soon as I join them. I don't think I've been banned from them or anything, so it's kinda weird.

                      To work with your CD-Keys:
                      • Go to "www.ea.com" and look for the box on the top right of the page that says either your player name or "Get into the EA nation."
                      • Click on the box titled "Get into the EA nation."
                      • Right below, click on "Log in."
                      • That will blow open another box asking for a "member name" and "password." Type in the member name you used to make the account and then the password and click OK.
                      • Go back to the top right. The box that originally read "Get into the EA nation" should now show your member name. Click on your member name.
                      • It will blow open a box just below your name. Look in the center column on the top row for the box that says "My Account" and click on it.
                      • That will open a blue and white page with 5 tabs. The tab on the far right will be the "My Games" tab, click on it.
                      • That should show a page that has your BF2 CD-Key/Registration Code listed as well as Registration Codes for your boosters.

I hope that was what it was that you needed.
