1 shot tank kills are a myth - here's what could be happening:

Basically, I got booted from The Pink Panther's server tonight for an alleged 1 shot kill tank exploit. This made me think, as I hadn't to my knowledge done anything wrong!?

During the game I remembered that I had been awarded some MIA2 kills when I was in a tank and hadn't fired a single shot at anybody. Then I figured it out - I was using the Engineer Kit and planting mines (map was Daqing Oilfields), and what I think is happening is if someone runs over your AT mines whilst you are currently in a vehicle then the kills get recorded as kills for the vehicle you are in!!!

I later verified this when I also received FAV kills whilst driving a jeep. This must have been for more mine kills elsewhere on the map. Sure enough when I drove back to where I'd dumped the mines some of them were now gone.

Anyway, just to let the rest of you guys and more importantly DICE/EA know.

I threw a grenade and killed two people, but got into a nearby empty APC before the grenade exploded. Got two APC kills for it.

I don't think it has anything to do with the 1-hit kill though, as I know for a fact it exists. I've pulled it off several times, mostly by accident, =P

Yup... one shot tank kills do happen.
There's a vid someplace that shows it very well (and doesn't involve the use of explosive augmented fakery).

Ok well you may be right. But that's what I was accused of when I logged back into The Pink Panther's server. Anyway, what it does do is give an explanation to some trigger-happy Admins...

And regardless, it should be fixed.

It's not really an exploit. It's an artifact of the way the game works that you can use to your advantage if yer damned lucky.

Basicly, you have to bounce the shell off the front end of the tank at a very low angle in a way to cause it to hit the turret.

Wish I could find the vid. Yes, tanks really do have reactive armour that makes things bounce off 'em in BF2. It's just very hard to observe.

The real one hit kills on tanks are the shells bouncing off and hitting it again.

Ok, well I feel even more hard done by then. Mine kills should be counted as AT mines even when in vehicles.

So...if you plant C4, jump into a hummer, wait for unsuspecting infantry, you could get your roadkills up? Am I understanding this right? Or is this only for APC/Tank vehicles?

Yeah, basicly you got screwed by the admins. One shotting a tank is NOT a legit reason to boot someone.

Sounds like the admins on the server need to spend a lot more time playing as Engineers.

I thought just about everyone knew about this 'feature' of the game because it happens to me virtually every round I play as an engineer and I've never had anyone complain or had an admin accuse me of anything suspicious. I agree that it's stupid and needs to be addressed, though, because when people (like the admins mentioned by DrJambo) are unfamiliar with the issue, players can be unfairly maligned and/or kicked.

They also need to be aware of the one-shot tank kill because, as has been noted, it is possible. After watching the video, try it off-line and you'll eventually succeed.

(I remember doing just that and succeeded on my second attempt ... and then couldn't do it again for about fifteen minutes!)

it happens rarely but if you shoot it in between the turret and the main body, (where the guy in the video shot) it sometimes happens to be a 1shot kill, but it has to be just perfect. Because where your aiming at, is most likely where the driver is at (the window kind of look when your inside the tank). I have tried that before, and it was a 1shot kill. It just has to be in the right spot
