I don't think the Purple Heart is really honorable or humiliating. Most of us who have one just happened to have a bad round and that unfortunate kill:death ratio at a specific point in that round.

I got mine back when I didn't even know the requirements. The map was Operation Clean Sweep and it was on a sparsely-populated server. Our team was just hopeless and we seemed to be up against ridiculously good players. Eventually, we were blocked in at the Abandoned Village and the USMC team just bombed and camped us non-stop. I tried everything to get away from the area but it was just impossible. Toward the end of the round, I reached 5-20 and ever since then, I've had my fancy medal to remind me of the occasion.

I wouldn't bother 'trying' to get one, though. If you play the game long enough, there's a chance a scenario will present itself where you get a Purple Heart without even altering your gameplay.

The Purple Heart was established by General George Washington at Newburgh, New York on 7 August 1782 during the Revolutionary War. It was reestablished by the President of the United States per War Department General Orders 3, 1932 and is currently awarded pursuant to Executive Order 11016, 25 April 1962; Executive Order 12464, 23 February 1984; and Public Law 98-525, 19 October 1984.

The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of an Armed Force or any civilian national of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the US Armed Services after 5 April 1917, has been wounded or killed, or who has died or may hereafter die after being wounded:

Thanks for posting the history of the real life medal. I must tell you though, my 3 friends who got a Purple Heart in Iraq all refer to it as the dumb ass award. When as ked why they simply state: "I didn't my ass down."

well I have family that have multiple purplr hearts, most of them not alive now..

I would like to of seen someone tell them it was a dumbass award

I got mine not long after the game came out and i did get it deliberatly . However only reason i went for the medal was becasue the medal requirments back then were insane you needed like 1000+ hours for most of the medals which i honestly beleaved id never clock up that amount of time on the game. Even now im only at 420 hours (or something similar) theres no way hardly anyone would have any medals at all if the original requirments werent lowered.

I have been lucky not to be awardet purple heart yet in BF2. Many of my friends do though,and beeing there when they got it i can tell u that they fought like hell to be with the team even though we knew the map was lost. Beeing spawn raped ain't fun but they did their very best. So in their cases an honourable medal!

I ould off course not play a game in the sake of getting one, thats meaningless.

Let's keep the thread in the spirit of BF2..confusing it with the real life Purple Heart is just going to initiate flames and bad feelings.

The use of this medal when youre dead is so that your family can hang it up in the window and be all american about it.

Some people play for medals like some people play for rank & unlocks...
It's not bad, just another feature of the game.

As far as honor or humiliation... I would take that to be in the eye of the medal recipient. Did you try and get it? Or did you get it while trying NOT to get it. (I would add my little story of humilitaion to this in the fact that I have tried to get it and failed..... Failed to get the PH because I wasnt watching the tickets closely enough and failed to get the 1 kill that would have set it )

I wouldnt really calling it an HONOR in getting it (on purpose or accident)... it is simply another award that you can add to your file. (This comming from someone who also focuses on what award he is close to getting and actually tries for it).

People will whine about teamwork... how your focus on the award is detracting from the team effort.... etc. (Which technically your trying to get 20 kills does quicking the posibility of your team loss) just have fun... play the way you want to and as long as it isnt TKing or other stupid stuff... do what you want. You paid for the game... the "Teamwork" Whores didnt buy it for you. (And there you go... teamwork whores... another **whore name now


As far as what purpose it serves in real life (Sorry Talus for the quick OT). Not everyone who is awarded it dies of their wounds. However it really serves no purpose to the dead. And while many families are mixed emotionally about receiving it after their soldier died, there are things the family is entitled to (Dont want to say benefits as loosing someone or being wounded is not a benefit) that soldiers who are not injured do not get. Some more tangible than others... Wont list them as they can be searched for on the net.... But no one goes out seeking one in real life.... at least I hope I never run into the guy/girl that does :)

That sounded very stupid IMO, as if there couldn't be any moment in BF2 for you where you just get owned by base raping and stuff....

A player that calls himself experienced in BF2 should have this medal IMO:) I dont know if I got the medal yet but I think getting owned is part of the game, and if you cant cope with losing you will HATE this medal.

try to get this medal with the knife/pistol badge medal in the same round, so it wont be sensless to die 20times but be warned if you get more than 5 kill BEFORE the 20 death the medal is toasted...
