I didn't buy a card with my comp and i have the sound in bf2 at high using software. And I can hear everything. Same thing with cs source I know exactly where everyone is by listening to foot steps. Can a soundcard make that big of a difference? Oh yeah and if I do use hardware, it sounds really bad and it crackles all the time. Why does the sound crackle when I use my onboard sound. Shouldnt I be able to use the onboard sound?

Going from 1gig - 2 gigs is the single, best improvment to gameplay. Reduces lag to almost none. Search the forums for all the theards about this :)

I agree with this, after I went to 2 gigs I noticed a pretty big improvement in load times and in game performance overall.

Get both! (jk) BTW the X-Fi Fatality has a certain kind of ram built onto the card.(not sure about the other x-fi's). Plus you can set the sound settings to ultra, which has to be amazing. Right now, im running an Audigy 2 with either my $70 Altec Lansing sound cancelling headphones, or my 5.1 Creative surround system, and they both sound great! PKM and the L96 sound so freaking awesome!

Also some time ago i read an article about a website that was testing bf2 performance, and when they used different amounts of ram. Goin from 512 to 1 gig was about 20 fps increase, but from 1gig to 2 was about a 2 fps increase, so they cooncured that BF2 only needs a gig, anything over is on the verge of overkill.

To be fair mate you’ve not been playing with great sound and not hear a everything, with the Xfi on it’s a new world out there. Everything sounds better and I have it maxed on ultra high and it plays fantastic.

With a good headset, I have a Icemat headset you would know the difference and say god ive been missing so much.

I was annoyed I had played the game for a few months before I got this card. Its like I missed out in those months. I want to hear every shot, explosion, shout and engine and that Heli hovering.

My cheapshake onboard sound and a pair of £10 headphones give me this. What's the point in shelling out on an expensive sound card? (not trying to be offensive, I honestly want to know what it does for the sound)

Right now, I can easily hear (for example) direction of bullets/tanks, or hear people's shuffling footsteps through the grass behind me. All the sounds 'sound' clear and not full of static, muffled etc.. What does a nice expensive sound card do to enhance this?

I got a new SB augigy 4 a few months ago and it does sound a lot better. A few weeks ago, I went from 1 gig to 3 gigs, and the system does perform much better. If I had to pick one, it would be the ram.

Defintely a sb audigy 2 zs over RAM. It will allow you to play on high hardware settings and it sounds great.

A nice soundcard will enable you to run on high sound settings and hardware mode without compromising performance on your system. With onboard audio, it is EXTREMELY difficult to run high settings and still have good performance, unless you have the uberest pc ever (but then it would have a sound card).

Get better headphones, but i prefer speakers.

RAM. It will actually make a noticable difference to performance. Hmm, maybe you should have made a poll instead so you can see all the results in one go. :)
