I have an X700 - It is old, I get 60-70 Fps on a 64 Karkand with 1 gig of Ram. It's a fine card, but will give a lower score on Benchmarking. I'd just save up for another card IMO but go for x700 for graphic quality and You said yourself for future gaming, then go for the 1600.

Too bad the X1600 is 128-bit though, really limits it. They should have made it 256-bit. I'd also go with the X1600 here. There was a thread here a while ago comparing the X1600 screenies, try do a search for it.

i dont mean to be a bitch about it, but i still have my doubts with those cards... cant you get an x800 or something ? or 6600 gt... ??

It's actually better than a 6600gt...hopefully the "future" games will be within the timeframe he keeps it(this year).

As long as he gets the XT model and not the 1600pro, it'll be fine. I cannot find a single review of the pro, but plenty of XT's. Shows some good scores which will only improve with future drivers.

It scored on par and higher than a 6800gs in regards to sm3.0 stuff...
