    X700 or X1600??

i'm trying to find an acceptable upgrade from my 9250 for a cheap price

right now ive found the lowest price for these are

radeon X700 256mb vivo edition (AGP) $175 canadian
    radeon X1600 256mb pro $176 canadian
    both sapphire

i can't find detailed comparison for geforce cards like on ATI.com so i'm not sure if i should include the 6600 in my list of consideration

it seems X700 is older but has a bit more gaming power
on the other hand the X1600 is only slightly lower but it may last longer
on the product comparison on ATI.com these two cards each have their up and downs

Both of those cards will probably do a decent job for you. The 700 is obviously an older card, and the 1600 is a bottom line generic compared to the 850 class or 1800 class. The 1600 has horrible benchmarks for gaming, but, again it is a newer card, I would hunt down some info for both on gaming.

          Re: X700 or X1600??

          thx for the advise mrbucket

ive found gamespot has a test between X1600 X700 Geforce 6600 and 6800

"The Radeon X1600 XT trailed behind the GeForce 6800 in our Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 testing, but it pulled out to a commanding lead in 3DMark05"
          X1600 - 5367
          6800 - 4223
          6600 128mb - 3688
          x700 pro 128mb - 3416

"Keep in mind that Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 are not Shader Model 3.0 games. Therefore 3DMark05 performance might be better indicator of how the Radeon X1600 XT will handle future PC games." gamespot

thats the key word: future games

if this test is accurate to all variants of each series then X1600 will be my choice

            geforce 6600 GT 128mb
            radeon X700 pro 128mb

Test System Setup: Athlon 64 FX-57 2.8GHz, 1GB (2 x 512MB) Corsair XMS DDR SDRAM (400MHz), Asus A8N SLI Deluxe Motherboard, Seagate 7200.7 160GB NCQ SATA Hard Drive, Windows XP SP2.

i dont mean to interrupt... but x700 doesnt play battlefield 2 at a friend of mine... it just doesnt start up we've trieed eevvveerrrything.. and when it does start up it goes slow... i think it's the card itself but i think you should know this and the x1600... well they put a x1600 in a macintosh, i think that says enough... so go for either a nvidia card or x800, x850...

its no the x700's fault it wont load on your friends computer, there are over hundreds of people on these forums with working x700's. and I dont get what you said about the 1600...

anyways, I would choose the x1600. as said, it is a newer card and a newer chip with shader model 3. It does not perform as well as the 6800gs, but it is cheaper and comes pretty close. Not only does it outperform the x700 in most games, but since it is a newer card and newer chip, it will last longer and be able to play more future games. I would definitly go with it, as long as you get it with 256mb memory.

they might make a mac version too, who knows, but the PC version is still good.

ya for you price point the x1600 seems like it would be good. Also consider the 6600 GT, i hav heard a lot of good things about that, but you may be better served by the ATI

The X1600 is the equivelent to the X700 in that it is the mid-level card for its respected generation of card. However the X1600 should out perform the X700 in all games.

between those two choices, I would go with the x1600.

Too bad the X1600 is 128-bit though, really limits it. They should have made it 256-bit. I'd also go with the X1600 here. There was a thread here a while ago comparing the X1600 screenies, try do a search for it.
