Re: What Type Of Commander Are You?

It really depends on the server load. Example: 24 ppl on a 64 player map then comander should get inot the **** and help the team win with more then just the uva and spotting. The apc was made for commanders when. fast movement to spawns that might have otherwise been taken over. Not everyone listens to the commander spotting. The other day i was spamming spotting because an apc was trying to take suberbs in karkand. The entire team kept trying to attack uncappable us a spawns so basically i was the only one who knew what was goin on. In a vechical i can spot, UAV and arty effectively and help the team win. You just never put yourself on the front line thats all. Sometimes if you want something done you have to do yourself. But again it really depends on the server load. A full 64 player server the commander should prolly hang back.

Re: What Type Of Commander Are You?

I just got my expert commander badge last night (finally) Here is what kind of cmdr I am.
I spot enemy troop movements, I move my squads into blocking forces when needed, I drop supplies when I feel like you need it (wounded vehicle, a spawn point that you are trying to cap, a sniper perch), I use Arty to screen and to kill, I use UAV constantly, I constantly scan with the sat for sappers and I pop out of command mode to defend myself and my assets (I usually play sniper or machinegunner) It has done fairly well for me, I hae 45+ golds (mostly from commanding) 45+ Silver, mostly from commanding and almost 40 bronze again almost all from commanding. I have been told I am a good commander, I have also be voted mutiny on, it really just depends on what kind of server you are on. I have resigned in mid-game due to player apethy, I hate that, when squads ignore you, why join a squad at all if you aren't going to listen to leadership?

i would usually concentrate on commanding & would not go into combat unless necessary. Guess i cannot multi-task, lolz!

I don't do anything half-assed. I do claim to be an effective front line commander. I also have the numbers behind me to show it.

I don't stat pad, play Karkand only servers, play short rounds or spam kits. I play full length rounds with whatever team I can get and I win. I have a 2.65 W/L ratio with almost 90 hours of command time. I have over 11,000 command points. I have an expert command badge, 227 gold, 149 silver and 108 bronze medals. Do the math. I medal almost every other round and more often than not, it's gold. I cap flags like a madman and have over 5,800 capture points. I have a steady K/D ratio of around 2-2.5. My overall accuracy is steady over 20%.

Am I a front line commander? You bet. Am I good at it? Yes I am. Let's drop the whole "You can't be effective as a front-line commander" rhetoric because I prove it wrong all the time. If you really want to see it in action, drop by our clan server. It's full or some really great regulars and some nice people. We have fun every night.

Re: What Type Of Commander Are You?

I got my first command earlier today.

It was a game of "farm the noobs" and we were doing crap, whilst the other team tubed us etc.

I noticed nobody had thought they could be high enough rank to take command; we had no commander!!!

I applied, got in and after a game of getting to grips with it, kicked their farming asses all the way out of Karkand.

In a small server, from my experience (and on Karkand, of course), I would say you should kill people a bit to start with (I was a sniper) but when they start taking flags behind your line, don't go into combat. Just get in a Vodnik and drive around taking flags back, occasionally running over an American.

So that's the sort of commander I am.

I hang back, shoot a bit, take some flags back from the enemy when everyone who isn't distracted by an asset every 20 secs are in the front line. I scan as often as I can, report enemy troop dispositions and artillery where the enemy will be when it arrives to delay them or behind them to trap them in a crossfire. I don't have that much time for supplies though.

Do all of this, and people will start asking you completely noob questions about gaining ranks, thanking you using the Commo Rose and the occasional mutiny will fail. He needed 5 votes, he got 2.

What was slick was the fact nobody bothered to make or join a squad, but we still won.

I'm not a frontline commander not because you can't, but because *I* can't.

Re: What Type Of Commander Are You?

Parish, I guess you can not be THE BEST commander ever while actually breathing, perhaps twitching your finger, out of that command screen, but you can certainly be a damn effective one and fight at the same time. I think the scan is more than enough to spot and gather intel on the enemies movement; its not neccisary to be watching, zoomed in at all times. That scan reloads very quickly too.

And as far as fullfilling request BOOM pronto... well, when I command, which is rarely, i admit, I fullfill request maybe 5% of the time. Reason: The asset would be much better used somewhere else, or it is recharging and the request is no longer relevant when it is available. Giving orders BOOM pronto, even if the squad accepts, they arent gonna crap themselves turning around to go defend something right that instant, so those few seconds a commander such as Parish might miss arent so important, in reality, as they may seem.

Of course, it depends on the team. If your team is great and listens and gets things done, you can sit back and direct the action more, but more often than not on a public server, you serve your team better by doing at least a little something while waiting for assets to reload. And of course the "T" comm function is great for dropping uav's and supply crates on the run, but a little to innaccurate for arty.

Re: What Type Of Commander Are You?

I'm the type of commander who gets ****ed off at muppets who issue a mutiny at me for no reason other than we're losing.

I don't fight to be the commander, no, I'm the commander because nobody else bloody wants to be! Why mutiny against me? Nobody else applied, and I did it after about 5 minutes when I realised nobody wanted the job!

Oh well, they're just idiots who are too scared to do it themselves. Two mutinies, Basic Command and the Staff Officer Ribbon, which do you think I'm going to remember? I also pride myself on the fact we only had three people when the first mutiny started, 2 votes needed. It got 1.

What is the best way to achieving the commander badge?

I spot enemy troops, tanks etc.., drop supply crates when needed, play the role pretty well but cannot for the life of me even get the basic badge?!

Is it the trophy score that gets you the badge over 40 points or the one that has the medic, resupply icon on it?

Any tips to a quick way of aquiring the badge?

                    Thanks!

Re: What Type Of Commander Are You?

When I got basic, I had 52 trophy points - it was weird.

Maybe it is the medic etc. score but I wasn't watching that. Actually, I think I got it when I neutered a flag...but I'm not enitrely sure.

My tip to you is play on a 16 player server with not too many people on it. The people on that are either too afraid or can't be bothered to even apply for commander.

There may be a few prats who try to mutiny you but that's only happened three times to me and they all failed.

Generally, if you find a dysfunctional, not so full server full of lone wolves you just apply, run around taking flags and stuff, spotting as often as you can and reading out enemy troop dispositions, artillerying flags you are about to loose (when there are no friendlies) and UAVing around.

One person may blame you if you're losing and try a mutiny, but it's a protest rather than him actually *wanting* to command.

I also got Advanced Knife Combat badge whilst commander.

I suggest Karkand as a map, as MEC you can take a Vodnik and just drive around running people over and taking flags back whilst the rest of your forces hold them off at Square/Hotel.
