I fail to see how this would lead to making the gaming industry affordable only to the rich or anything remotely like that.
If BF2 were conducted as 1942 was, we would have been getting the content of at least one booster pack FREE in a patch, and much more per expansion pack in terms of content. However, for what you could have picked up for $50 then with the free patch content, is now $100 (do the math) for equal or less content. Not to mention the pathetic pricing of ranked servers, exploiting the sad state of people "needing" their ranks and unlocks and everything. I fail to see how this ISN'T leading to it becoming more expensive. And should that trend continue, it indeed will become an exclusive industry for the fact people either can't or won't pay such pathetic prices.

The fact is, gaming can get expensive, period. Nobody is forcing anybody to pay for their enjoyment but people still do it. If someone couldn't possibly afford say, $100 to play a game, then a good suggestion would be for that person to find a less expensive pastime. People will vote with their money so I guess it all remains to be seen but I don't buy into some gaming industry "doomsday scenario." It would be complete idiocy for the gaming industry to jack up prices so much that their customers dwindle down to the "elite few" who could afford to play. With less people playing there would be less servers and a small community with less support and modders, etc. It wouldn't last very long. The smart thing to do is to keep it more mainstream and that's what I think they will do.
Also, papalatiolais, I earn my money through some very hard work so I don't see what's wrong with using the money I earned to buy a new "toy" or two for the game I'm playing. It's not like I'm buying something that gives me an unfair advantage.
In any case, that's just my take on it all so take it for what it's worth. :)
Seriously, there is no reason to say this is uncalled for. It's just an idea and nobody is suggesting that you MUST pay to get weapons rather that it could possibly be an alternative. By his idea, you could still go the "old" route and play the game long enough to get your weapons and nobody would be forcing you to pay for anything. I fail to see how this would lead to making the gaming industry affordable only to the rich or anything remotely like that.
"If you have to pay money to get these unlocks and have that bad of a need for them, I think you need to re-evaluate why you're playing games in the first place."
You pay money to get enjoyment out of a virtual world, what's the difference? Nobody said that anybody is in NEED of anything but paying the equivalent of a McDonald's value meal for a few new items as an ALTERNATIVE is not that big of a deal to me. I don't need to re-evaluate why I play games, I simply may like something new and may not have the time to earn 50,000 points in this lifetime. I have a son that occupies just a little bit more of my time than a video game but that doesn't mean that I have any less right to enjoy a game as someone who lives with mom and plays 12 hours a day. I may just want something new. Doesn't everybody like something new from time to time? If not, we could all still be playin BF1942 and there would have been no need for BF2.
It doesn't seem like that bad of an idea to me. :)
That was my exact thought when I posted this original thread! Either you're working in real life or in game to advance. For some, it's easier and more fun to play for it and there's no problem. If it was feasible in my case, I would too. However, I'd rather work an hour to try out new weapons vs playing for points for a long time. If they made it so the you got all the unlocks maybe around 35-40 that'd be nice but it seems more likely of selling the unlocks as they're selling the small map packs.
I'd appreciate if an Admin/Mod could move this back to Interview Questions, it's something at the very least would be interesting to hear what EA/Dice says about it. Thanks.
