Game Still won't Install

Game will just not install on my rig.I took the firstcopy of BF2 I bought back to the shop and exchanged it for a new one. Thought the first may have been faulty. Nope It still flatly refuses to install.

So tried it on a friends ancient laptop and it installed no problem.

Problem is this. When DVD goes in and autruns I get the splash screen with the options, ie video, readme, install etc. All buttons work exept for install which does nothing. Try and run it from the setup.exe file on the DVD and I get the error message

"set.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost."

I have tried everything from reinstalling windows installer to running a registry cleaner/fixer. I have googled set.tmp and found nothing useful, spoke to EA technical support who were next to useless.

Thing is everything else works fine, all other games/software install no problem. This is the first and only time I have ever encountered this and its driving me up the wall. I have two DVD drives on my machine and it won't work in either. Don't think it can br that anyway as it detects the DVD fine and runs the splash screen.

My rig has an FX57 processor, 7800 GTX, 2 gig RAM with all the latest drivers etc.

Please anyone have any ideas at all to put me out of my misery. Please sensible suggestions only, I have posted this before and had comments like "must be user error" which really don't help. I have been playing PC games for over 10 years so have a pretty good knowledge of how things are supposed to work.

Indeed, but in the end it's *your* PC that has a problem somewhere and *you're* the person in the best position to fix this problem.

Could it be the game clashing with any virtual drive software you have installed?

I have no idea what virtual drive software is so don't know if I have any. What I can't understand is why every other piece of software/games installs no problem. This games uses installshield so I have tried others that use that again with no problems whatsoever. It is absolutely driving me up the wall, never ever encountered anything like this before. I know it must be somethimg wrong on my PC, but what? its just a mystery.

Try a windows re-install, normally fixes alot of problems.

knowing the operating system might help as well as any antivirus software you might be running, free disk space, access rights, whether the dvd came from under the counter.....

The DVD is genuine from the shop, all my antivirus software is disabled, free disk space is oodles of GBs ie at least 200GB, I am administrator, as I said everything else works fine, just this that doesn't.

That website for installshield looks more like its for software developers who use it on their wares rather than us mere users.

Operating system is windows XP all fully up to date.

i had the same problem, it turned out ot be my dvd/ cd rom, so i had to buy a whole new 1

If it was a hardware problem then I would have thought it would be the same on whatever I tried to install, not just BF2. For both my DVD drives to fail to run it is a unlikely.
If I reistalled windows, does this mean I have to start from scratch, and reinstall all my other software hardware etc or can it be done over the top. Excuse my igmorance on reinstalling windows.

BF2 requires a recent DVD drive. There's a good chance that anything more than 3 years old isn't going to work. I can't remember the spec but the manual says what speed drive is needed. If it isn't fast enough it won't let you install.

My DVD drives are both under a year old. The friends laptop I tried it on was ancient (nowhere near powerful enough to actually run the game) with an equally prehistoric DVD drive. That started the install process normally, no error messages.

You have Service Pack 2 installed?
Clear all your temp folders in your system, and make sure that you delete any previous BF2 installation files and folders.
Do NOT under any circumstance reinstall windows. Unless you really want to spend all that time updating the drivers, software, reinstall all applications, backup all emails, addresses etc. So unless you really have no other option don't listen to the people that tell you to uninstall Windows.

Yes mate I've got SP2. Tried all the above and it just laughs in my face and shouts LOSER. I am destined never to play this game.
