    Xfire explained

Well, i'm sure that some people don't know what Xfire is, what it does, where to download it... To bad, cause its a great program.
(its my first guide so ...)

    1. What are the possibilities of Xfire.
1.0 Faster loading into BF2If you start BF2 with Xfire, the logging in towards the server will happen a lot faster

    1.1 Friend Tracker
See when your friends are online, what game they're playing, and what server they're on
Join in on their games with one click
See what the friends of your friends are playing

    1.2 One click join
Once you're ready to join one of your friends in a game, simply select your friend's name and click the Join button. (Say goodbye to cutting & pasting server IP addresses!)

    1.3 Server browser
Xfire's server browser is built right into the client so you don't need yet another app running while gaming. You can easily filter by game type, map name, ping, etc. Xfire also keeps track of your recent servers, your favorites, and your friends' favorites.

    1.4 IM in game
Unlike other IMs, you can send and receive messages from inside games without having to minimize (Alt+Tab) the game window. Your IMs appear right on screen: just hit Scroll Lock + X to respond. You can even take screenshots by pressing Scroll Lock + S and automatically upload them to your profile page.

    1.5 Voice Chat
Xfire's voice chat lets you talk 1:1 or in groups with your friends while you're in or out of game. Superior voice quality and custom bandwidth settings ensure your gaming will still go on lag-free.

    1.6 File & Patch downloads
You can download the latest mods, patches, and trailers for your favorite games to your desktop over our flexible and convenient P2P file network. Subscribe to Xfire's download channels and get game patches and files automatically delivered as soon as they're out- no more waiting around to get a patch, just play.

    1.7 Profiles with automatic stats
Xfire shows off your gaming stats, such as the games you play and how many hours you've played them. They're on your profile and Miniprofile, which can be embedded anywhere on the web.

    1.8 Over 500 games supported
Xfire supports many popular online PC games, including server and non-server based First Person Shooters, Real Time Strategy, and Role Playing Games. If you play it, we probably have it. And we're constantly adding newly suggested games.

    1.9 Take ingame screenshots

Take multiple ingame screenshots by the touch of a key. The screenshots can be uploaded directly into you account so others can view them.

    2. What about the program itself?
    - Xfire is free, small (less than 2 Megs), and quick and easy to install.
    - Xfire keeps track of when and where your friends are playing PC games online and lets you join them easily.
    - Xfire provides a powerful server browser.
    - Xfire allows you to IM with your friends from within games while you play.
    - Xfire provides a powerful file download system.
    - Xfire provides built-in stats tracking.
    - Xfire provides miniprofiles.

    3. can my computer run it?
    - PC with a Pentium Processor running Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP
    - 2 MB available hard drive space recommended
    - Desktop resolution of 800 x 600 at 256 colors (1024 x 768 at 16 bit color or higher recommended)
    - Internet Explorer 5.0 with Service Pack 1 or higher
    - Internet connection (broadband recommended)
To fix lag, Launch the main menu for Xfire>Toolz>Optionz>Filez and set everything to "Disabled" unless you like to watch ghei WoW movies of people frapsing themselves leveling and whatnot.
To fix FPS, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and end as many 'svchost.exe' processes as it takes for your FPS to return to its glorious days of... highness?

    4. where can I download it.
A link to the site: here
A link to the file: here

    5. The End
I hope you will all like my short summary on Xfire, if you have any ideas that will help other players and users, feel free to post them right here.

I used to use Xfire. I agree it is a great program. However one of my friends detected someone trying to hack into his computer thru someone's computer on his buddy list. He emailed Xfire and they said they were looking into it. But it's been 6 months and we have not heard back from them. So I'm not using it until its security flaws are fixed.

This is not the only time I've seen or heard this.

I stopped using Xfire partially in reason to performance issues. Actually, all our friends did. For some, there is no noticeable difference, for others, it causes lag.

The good thing about it, is not having to tell your friends which IP addy the server is each and every time, but we survive.

For those looking to use a great piece of software when playing with several others, it is great. If you start getting lag however, you know where the problem lies.

          Good thread.

          PEACE

                  Re: Xfire explained

personally, i love xfire & have never had a prob with it... and i seriously doubt it has more security issues than any other piece of software...

also not mentioned in the guide:

                  now supports transferring files

u can join your buddies' voice chat thru xfire (ventrillo & teamspeak both work well)

as for the lag issues in game, i think this is the exception more than the norm... yes, some people have probs with it, but i personally dont & i know a lot of ppl who play bf2 on less than stellar rigs & havent had a single problem... plus, with updates every 2 weeks, known issues are patched up quickly & games are being added every update

all in all, i really love this proggy & think its a necessity for any clanmember or just someone who likes to game with friends

well the BF2 joining feature, doesnt work very well, but I still love xfire, and any FPS drop I dont notice.

I've seen this when the game first came out, but the newest version of Xfire should help you out fine. If not, then I'm not too sure. Maybe check their forums?
