It's not all that free, someone has to pay for the servers. EA doesn't pay for the majority of their servers, they charge the server hosting companies that rent out ranked servers by making them kick back one free 'EA Official Server' for every tenth server they rent out. So the people renting and the server hosting companies are the ones that get their ball hairs yanked.
If you do rent a ranked server, your basically paying for the rights to admin it and pick your maps (or play it in unranked for CAL/TWL/NATO/STA matches), most of the settings are locked down while in ranked mode.
Personally, I think BF42 and DC were a step ahead in terms of gameplay. BF2 feels alot less challenging compared to them. Even BFV was better, in terms of gameplay.
Don't get me wrong, BF2 looks hella nice and is capable of alot more than the previous BF games, I just don't think it utilized everything it was capable of doing to make it feel that as good as it looks.
