I'll proudly wear the lower rank.
I'm sure you would rather proudly wear the higher rank if it was easier enough for you to get it. The badges and the ranks add new meaning to the game. Without the points, the ranks, the awards, I would've stopped playing this game after the first 2 weeks, just like most of the other games. Instead, it's been 7 months and I'm still playing. PLaying for fun only, not for points becomes boring very fast. This way the points you are after create the challenge and the fun.

What you've said about rather having the lower rank is same as saying "I'm rich enough to drive a ferrari, but I preffer to ride a bicycle instead".

I totally agree, i would also have stopped playing ages ago. Like when i used to play halo & win very few games you get nothing to show for it just a name that says '1st' At least with the ranks 'Even if you don't play for stats' you can look back at youre progress, it also adds a fun element where you're always trying to get a badge or medal.

I don't think i would of even brought bf2 if it didn't have the points system really because i get bored really easy.

Sadly I think you're probably right (at least for most people). I call this the "Bright Shinny Things" Syndrome. What it means is that most people act about as thoughtfully as your average fish. Put something bright and shiny in front of them and they'll go for it, just like a fish for a lure. Ufortunately this is still part of the human condition.

This mentality unfortunately leads to a lot of selfish, narrow-minded play and is exactly counter productive to the team-play mentality that the creators said they wanted to foster with this game. It's why you see servers where people are only using knives. These lamers are trying to get their bright shinny thing instead of playing the game as a team. It doesn't matter to them that they are cheating the system to get their medal in a particularly lame way. By going this route, they've already succumbed the mentality that they can't get the medal by honorable means, so they are trying to cheat their way to it. This is just one example. There are hundreds if not thousands. Exploiters are just as bad as are those narrow-minded fools who pat themselves on the back all the time talking about their kill to death ratios. Anyone can get a high K/D ratio if they're willing to play the game in a certain way. The same is true of score per minute and most of the other stats. Sadly it's impossible to have stats that really show what matters -when you've made a crucial difference to your team winning. The only stat I pay attention to is Win/Loss ratio.

I think the real heroes of this game are the ones that resist this ego stroking mentality of stats and bright shinny things and they work towards better teamplay in spite of these trappings. It's a sad state of affairs when so many fragile egos want their bright shinny things so badly when really they just represent pixelated emptiness. These pitiful people want their traping so they can hold them over the heads of the other pitifuls and brag how much better they are. This is exactly contray to real heroics, which are done without thought toward personal gain.

Decorated fools is the best description I can think of to describe these people. Sadly I have to admit that I sometimes get caught up in this as well. It annoys the hell out of me because it takes my focus off of what really matters in the game -TEAMPLAY. When I think back to my proudest moments in the game, NONE of them involve bright shinny things. They involve winning a very close game or doing something particularly well. Often they involve stopping the enemy with my squad when there were overhelming odds against us or doing something small that wins the game for my team but gets few points or little recognition for myself. Being in that place is where I want to be, not some lamers false pride in winning some stupid medal or such.

I realize that this post will make me a target by a lot of the people who are into these kinds of empty trappings. You want your shinny things and your bragging rights to go with them. How sad. How pathetic. I'm sure we'll hear a lot of rationalizations from the seekers of bright shinny things on why these are so terrific. I'm hoping that a few people at least will understand what I'm talking about though.

Good point, I like to think though that the real heros are the ones that got their awards by playing fair, not the ones that didn't even try, definitely not the stats padders and the cheaters. I know it took me long hours to get my pistol and especially my knife badge, lots of frustrations when I was so close but got killed at the end. Also during this time my overal stats were suffering. But when I finally got them the overal satisfaction was even better. That is something that the cheaters will never have.
Word of advice to the ones that don't have the badges yet and are too intimidated to try: direct confrontation in order to get the knife badge won't give you anything. You can play any kit but you have to use sniper tactics and behavior, in other words sneak out behind enemy lines, preferably close to a spawn point. When you see them respawning attack them with your knife. You can pobably get at least 2 kills like this before you get killed. When you do, try the same thing again. Pistol is alot easier and even direct attack is allowed. You'll be surprised how accurate the pistol is. Also it happened to me many times when i was exchanging bullets with someone to run out of amo. Guess what, while it took them 4,5 seconds to panicly reload, it took me less that a second to draw my pistol and to get extra pistol kill, most of the time while being a single shot next to dying.
