It most of the time has to do with the forward looking capability of the TV missile system (as in RL). Whenever you have a lock, it looks for a closer thread as well. When it finds one, it overrules the locked data. But what can happen is that the other target is destroyed by someone else, just before impact. Your rocket will then take the next block or circle target on your display even without lock. If it goes for friendlies, you can try to steer it away by pulling your cross hairs sharply upwards or sideways. I know, easily said as this all goes down in seconds, but it's the only way to avoid TK's.
Oh forgot. It's best to take aim flying towards the enemy lines instead of towards your own lines. If the missile misses the locked target, it often will take out another enemy target on your display as long as you don't touch the cross hairs or your pilot doesn't make a sharp turn.
