The simplest, yet longest method is start with max LOW settings (lowest screen res, low gfx settings, no AA, etc.) and then slowly add 1 thing at a time until the FPS is smooth enough AND the gfx is high enough. HIGH fps with no eye candy is great for benchmarks, but sux for actual gameplay. LOW fps and great eye candy is just as bad, if not worse.
I have a Dell LCD with a native 1280x1024 res, but even at medium I get some stuttering. I dropped it to 1024x768 and medium settings and it is much better. Now, I have OTHER issues that need to be resolved, but at least it's smooth and gameplay is good.
Take some time and start there. Also, BTW, be sure that any gfx driver control panels are also set to MAX PERFORMANCE or a similar title when starting out. YOu don't to skew the results by running a high gfx setting via the card and then contradicting it in game.
