I was hoping that someone (like Black_Ducks_1) might be able to answer this question for me. Exactly how litteral are the translations in BF2? I've heard it stated from speakers of both Chinese and Arabic that they are litteral translations (and therefore sound funny), but to what degree? For example, when they say "No way, man" in Arabic do they litterally say "No possibility of occurence, adult human male!" This is really just out of curiosity.

Re: A more specific question about the Arabic/Chinese voice acting in BF2
I thought the Chinese voice-acting was really well done. I think it's spot on.
Like when they say MEDIC in Chinese -- It actually means doctor. Because there's really no word for medic in Chinese anyways... Heheh -- Dunno about the Arabic though. -

I'm Chinese, so I should know about the Chinese voices.Originally posted by ED-209i dont know about the chinese and arabic but if they are anything like the russian voices in SF then yes they're are completely off
I think it's only 'literal' if you translate it directly to ENGLISH. I think it's accurate, the voice actors have 'the accent'.Comment

Re: A more specific question about the Arabic/Chinese voice acting in BF2
There was/is a thread that had three or four chinese phrases transliterated.
I think someone (COUGH) should transliterate some of the best-sounding PLA voiceover phrases.
One reason for me to switch to PLA whenever possible = the voiceovers are totally jawsome.Comment

Re: A more specific question about the Arabic/Chinese voice acting in BF2
the chinese translation in BF2 is barely understandable. most of them dont make sense, except for some phrases like "kuai kuai kuai" which means "go go go", but it still sounds funny to say them in real life.
i think the chinese in BF2 is the mandarin with taiwanese accent and diaglect.Comment

Overall the Arabic translation is fine. It is not that bad.
There are few translations that are wrong, to say the least.
The most apparent one, seems to be a mistake of linking the wrong instruction to the wrong sound file, is when your team is completely loosing you hear the commander saying "we've regained control! Good work men!" or something similar.
The other one when you say "get in" it actually says in Arabic: "bring the car in" I think this is because the guy who read the translation made a mistake in reading the given script from DICE (just assumption). All it takes is reading a vowel incorrectly to make that mistake.
"Enemy units on the road" is translated literally. The first time I heard it I though the enemy was dead on the ground! it turned out to be the opposite! the enemy was waiting for me on the road to kill me! lool
"First aid here" is translated into "I need first aid" same thing with "need ammo"
These are the ones I can recall right now that are wrong. The rest of the translation is fine, although may sound funny because of the way the guy who recorded them was talking (not because of a wrong translation). For example when you fire a missile it says "fox one". That one is translated into "the rocket was launched" the translator says it in a funny way like if he is suffocating.
Overall I can give it 8/10
Also I want to add that anyone who claims to be an arabic language speaker should understand the in-game Arabic translation. It is recorded in "Standard" Arabic. It is NOT an accent/diaglect. It is the language you learn in the textbooks. Fortunatly, there is only one "Standard" arabic language that we learn in textbooks.Comment

Hmmm, these mixed message are making my head hurt a bit. It would seem odd that native speakers would be divided over whether "their" ingame voice sound right. Either way, I think I get what you're saying black_duck_1. Thanks for the info.
So what is the litteral translation of the MEC's version of "No way, man." anyway? I can imagine it would sound pretty weird in English. Even similar languages (like English and Spainish) can sound really weird when translated litterally. For example, I'm pretty sure the way to say "I like..." in Spainish would litterally translate in to "to me, my pleasing is..."
Oh and one more question (sorry
), what exactly is a dialect. I know it falls somewhere between an accent and language, but English doesn't have any so I'm not sure what it really means.

dialects are like an accent although I think they are more of a regional "flavor" of a particular language. ie southerners, new yorkers etc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DialectOriginally posted by puglousHmmm, these mixed message are making my head hurt a bit. the indivdual soidler's VO is very good, and is possibly done by an actually ex-military guy in PLA. (he managed to use the terms correctly), but the commander's voice sucks.
yes, the translation is literal but it made sense.Comment

No, it is very poorly done, most of us the natvie Chinese speakers could not get what he or she was trying to say. Also the accent is laughable.Originally posted by EdisLeadoI thought the Chinese voice-acting was really well done. I think it's spot on.

And there are proper translations for medic - a Yihubin or Weishengyuan, I don't remember it was pronounced in game as Yisheng, which translates to Doctor, don't know where you got that from.Comment

I often throw healthpacks as a Chinese Medic for no reason other than the joy of hearing him yell.Originally posted by glaucomaThere was/is a thread that had three or four chinese phrases transliterated.
