    More complex reload command

Something that i realised is that the way we reload guns in games is possibly too basic. I think its also an untapped gameplay mechanic.

At the moment we just hit 'reload'.

What i was thinking is that there should be a sequence of commands (possibly, but not necessarilty, buttons) to reload the guns and that the sequence should be different for every gun. Then it actually requires a little skill to reload the gun and you have to actually learn how to do it. It would also add alot of tension in fire fights. Also the speed and timing you use to do the sequence has an effect on how fast you reload...so doing it too slow will abviously take longer to reload, whereas too fast increases the risk of jamming it (and of you making a mistake). Then some guns can be made more prone to jamming while reloading.

For example for a sniper rifle you have to raise the bolt, pull it back sway the cartridge, push the bolt back and press it down. The command sequence for that could look like ABCBA (whatever A or B corresponds to).

For a shot gun. ABBBBBBBBC where A is the 'begin reloading' command, B is insert cartridge (however many times you want) and C is ****[edit..lol..that thing you do to a shotgun that sounds like a swearword].

Im not sure what A B or C actually should be. They could be buttons or even mouse gestures. Or maybe something similar to the com-rose.

    What do you think?

Forget about it. This is not a sim.

Wasnt necessarily for bf2. Nor is it designed to make the game more realistic.

Im not an advocate of anal realism...i think aiming for realism in games is too low a target.

I think you have waaaaay to much time on your hands. Maybe we should have a level where we reload our bullets, like A could be put bullet into machine, B pull the lever to press in the projectile C ........
Or maybe we can have a level where we give the LAV an oil change
Or PM the radio in all the Humvees.
or how about a level where we all sit down and clean our rifles.
        Give me a break dude.

Great idea! And we could implement breathing controls as well. And a button to blink, and you could scratch your arse using the mouse wheel.

No the idea is not retarded. Why do you call it that anyways?

But I don't think that it should or could be implemented the way you are suggesting it.
The only way this could be implemented, and you could say "yes this guy has skill" is if we were wearing full VR suits, a plastic rifle connected via a serial port, and could move in the game world without mouse/keyboard. There you have to jump, and not use the spacebar. Also reloading a weapon is actually a great skill. Some people can do it a lot quicker than others due to the training.
But I don't think that the reload process could be made more realistic by having to punch a whole series of keys. That's just not going to work.
A basic ingame navigation has to be very intuitive, and easy to learn.

                  Re: More complex reload command

Navigation, definately, has to be easy. But reloading the gun isnt really navigation, its an action performed through a UI. I mean, you wouldnt have a "fire at that guys head" button would you?

The reason i suggested it is that it would give more balancing options.

Doesnt have to be complicated, even having to hit a 2 button sequence at the right time would add alot of interactivity. So you have to actually use the gun not just the UI.

To SABO: Do you know what retarded means? I think the definition is somewhere close to "posting on a forum just to say lol thats retarded".

Thats just an extremist point of view...why not take it to the other extreme.

Lets have a perfectly simple UI with only one 'win the game' button...whoever hits it first wins.

All extreme points of view are flawed so you cant use that as an arguement.

                        Re: More complex reload command

Disagree with you on this one. I can see what your driving at, but it's not something you really think about when reloading in real life. Once you practice for a bit reloading is something you do. Heck honestly you rarely reload in the middle of a tense moment. Normally you have a good idea of how many rounds you have left and there is almost always a pause in the fight that you can use to catch your breath and reload. Not to mention that it doesn't take 30rds at point blank distances to hit someone. That's a limitation of the game because you have no periphreal vision and the weapon doesn't move seperate from your body.

The only thing about reloading I'd like to see is a way to stop reloading the DAO 12 part way thru so you can shoot a few rounds if needed. Something like hitting the fire button will stop reloading and hitting it again allows you to shoot what you have loaded so far.

                          Re: More complex reload command

I personally find the OP's plan a horrible idea, because reloading should be a marginal part of the gameplay. It should serve as a tactical time-"punishment" for letting the magazine run out, so to speak.
Making it that complex, would totally shift game balance towards reloading, centering the game around reloading, making it a reload-sim moreso than a shooter.
Sorry, I can't imagine it to be any fun at all.

That would be quite fun on the DAO-12 and the pumpguns, yeah.

                            Re: More complex reload command

There is a constant comparison between guns in game and guns in reality.

But ingame, theyre boiled down to pointing and clicking...and thats it.

Thats why firing a gun in BF2 doesnt map onto reality. Everything is boiled down to macros and a mouse movement interface. That is what gives rise to the arguements about game vs reality. I mean, how can you actually compare the two?

That also means that the characteristics of the guns comes more from the mouse interface than from reality. For example, you talk about the accuracy of a gun. How does this map into a game when you are using a mouse? Plus, as Chavr said, there are other factors two (like limits of vision).

So i suggested breaking the reload macro open and turing it into an actual gameplay action rather than a UI action.

                            Just an idea.

[edit] good point about the number of rounds being need in reality. Another good example of how different factors relate.

Hmmm... sounds to cerebal for the majority of BF2 players

I'd like to see more control over reloading though - what you mentioned for the shotty would be good so you can choose how many shells you want to load.
