That's like what I explained earlier in one of my posts...the holophonic sound tricks your mind into believing that it is there, triggering your senses of smell, feeling, and even the actual believing that the objects exist. Ussually only works on the first time though, once you hear it again you know that the matches are not there, you know that they do not exist right next to you.

Visuals and graphics set the stage and have a universe made for you, while when you listen to sounds there is no screen the sound is in the air and if the sound is like holophony then you can imagine the universe and believe that you're actually there. In the end I wish video game developers focused more on sound then graphics.

I'm on the same boat with Sharpshot. I appricate sounds more than visuals especially on movies and video games. I don't mind spending on alot of dough when investing on a good surround sound setup w/ good cables. Although I don't mind having super clear and fantastic visuals, but for me, sounds really play a big part when consuming any entertainment medium.

that should be the new standard in audio......i got nice headphones.....i tried looking at where the sound was coming from but my head would turn the sound too...only works when it passes in front of you.....you can look at the source and follow it.....i could feel it......was wierd

this isnt new... except if you are saying the sound triggers the smell senses then its new. audio wise... alot of 3rd party application can do that. here try this http://www.sensaura.co.uk/demos/inde...e=player3d.htm
                this has no "smell" :P

That would probobly take alot of memory usage because the difference is is that a game is not already set, it's not already recorded like the demo we just heard to be able to have the sounds be calculated a certain difference away or a certain volume I think would be impossible to do.

Sort of. As you obviously know a dummy head is used to simulated a real human head, with microphones in each ear. This means that the recording itself has all these little time and phase differences, changes in frequency content etc that are created due to the shape of our ears and head etc.

HRTF on the other hand, aren't recordings, they are a set of instructions which alter any given sound. They define these intstructions by placing tiny microphones in the ear canal of a dummy head or a real head. Then take lots and lots of measurements from different angles, elevations and distances. When these recordings are compared with the original, direct sound, there are slight differences. These differences define the HRTF.

A very simplified example of this:

If I placed a microphone in your ears and recorded "U spin me right round" by Dead or Alive being played directly behind you at a distance of 5m, apart from the fact you might explode with rage, I would be able to ascertain differences in the recorded audio, with the audio being played to you. If this for example meant that your outer ear deflected away some of the high frequency bandwidth, i.e. it reduced the frequency content above say 10kHz, then in future I would know that if I wanted to emulate a sound coming from that exact position all I would have to do is cut the required amount of frequency above 10kHz, and it would appear directly behind at a distance of 5m, provided all the other spacial cues are accounted for as well.

As I say, systems have already been created that allow you to watch and ordinary DVD with incredible 3D surround using headphones. Unfortunately my teacher says they didn't get to production phase. Some conspiracy theory about not being allowed to go into production by the U.S Government, Bill Gates, Sony, Aliens and Ben and Jerry's ice cream I think.

How do zombies smell ? :P

                      About the "Smell" thing anyway.
of course it doesnt work for everyone, beacause some ppl just dont get fooled. (not a matter of IQ.. your brain either does or does not fool you)

Also if you dont know the smell, you sure wont experience it. ( i for example dont know how gunpowder smells :) .. does it make any distinctive sound anway ? i mean. it sjust powder D_d )

If you think that is good, get an X-Fi. Though not *quite* as good as that the card is simply superb and improves the sound considerably. It cannot do the height perception quite so well but the accurate panning of sounds from left to right is almost perfectly the same.

The XFI CMSS3D engine models the same head/ear etc. interactions too so it sounds incredibly lifelike. Firing an F2000 in Ghost Town and hearing the shot reverb off the wall before hearing the counter fire whizz past your ear is TOTALLY different on an X Fi. Especially noticeable going from onboard sound to X-Fi.

Don't bother with the Fatality one, just get the Xtreme Music one.

Who makes X-Fi? Nvidia? Does it work best with a surround sound setup or with headphones?
