I have both, I like both, but I definitely prefer the DAO. It has a much larger clip compared to the MK3A1, making it easier to kill multiple enemies. The Jackhammer is much better against single enemies (it does a lot more damage than the DAO) but is bad against multiple enemies.

which one would you prefer, based on only the weapon itself, not on what kit you play most or whatever?
They're pretty close but the DAO's ability to top off after firing a few rounds and its larger magazine give it the edge for me over the Jackhammer's greater damage per shot. If you include the context of the kit then there's no contest; DAO-12 is a huge improvement over SMGs.

I'd say it's because you're less likely to run out of ammo in the middle of the action.
The DAO-12 is the more important unlock, because the AT's standard guns are rather worthless.
In a direct comparison though, the Jackhammer wins hands-down if used right. Clearing out one of those little shacks (e.g. at the Intake flag on Kubra Dam) is only a matter of pressing the trigger at the right time and rushing through.
The DAO is easier to handle, because of the larger mag size, which makes it more forgiving if you miss a shot when battling a group of enemies.
However, the true shotgun connoisseurs use the pump shotguns.
i've tried them all and of the automatic shotguns the DAO is actually the best, no doubt about that, but compared to the pump action ones , they are just toys...
someone that uses the pump action as much as i do, and kills as many engineers with the jackhammer or AT with the DAO knows swhat i'm talking about, 90% of the time the guy with the pump action wins the battle.

Completely agree, but there are those times where you turn the corner and encounter multiple enemies and the pump isn't always best in that situation, while the DAO excels at it.
My breakdown, for single enemys, pump shotty or jackhammer. For multiple enemies, all the other shottys, but still including the jackhammer cause it can take down multiple enemies quickly.

i can still get out of a multiple enemy situation with the pump action better than with a DAO, its just my way of playing i guess :)
