Nonsense. Enough people buy new games to keep everybody's pockets full.
I mean, stores sell games. Stores get money for selling said games. Some stores (like Gamestop) buy used games. Why do people sell their old games? To buy new ones of course! And then when people go to Gamestop and buy used games, the store gets a bonus because they're selling it at a slightly higher price than what they bought it for, so the store makes a tidy sum so that they can stay in business. And what's their business? Buying more games to sell, of course!
And why do people buy used games? Usually so they can save money to buy new ones!
Like me, I bought BF2 and SF. That's $80 (well, $65 to me, had a gift card). I also wanted to nab a copy of "Gun" when it came out. No way I could make myself think I could afford to shell out another $40-$50 for another game. Well, at Gamestop, they had a used copy for only $25! I jumped on it and went away happy. There. Now they've got more money to buy new copies of "Gun" and whatever else they want to sell.Comment

Not just EA. Sony is ready to squash not only pre-owned games but also borrowing games for PlayStation 3.

The site cites US Patent #6,816,972, which is for "a device and method for protection of legitimate software against used software and counterfeit software in recording media." Specifically, the patented technology would verify that when software was inserted into a "machine" (read: console), it was registered to that machine. If it couldn't, the technology would prompt the machine to shut down, preventing the software from being accessed.
Such measures would be fine and dandy, were they targeted at pirated software. But the patented tech--which bears the name of Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi--is specifically designed to prevent used software from being sold. "Since only titles for which legitimate software has actually been purchased and which have been initially registered in the machine table can be used, resale (so-called used software purchase) after purchase by an end-user becomes practically impossible," it reads. Such measures would also prevent lent or rented software from being played.Comment

in uk where i live.................
i used to buy and sell alot of games until.................
i purchased bf2 and the guy at the desk says"do u no u cant bring that game back only if it broke(this doesnt include radial scratches)due to pc games being bought for there cd=key and then brought back for a refund"
then in a mattter of 2 weeks all second hand (newgames)were gone from the shelves and only a few shop sell really old ones.
thus making u buy and keep the dam game.
in doing this do they think it will stop pirating cus it wont.
so any one thinking of getting a second hand sf/ef chances are the key is coped or you wont find it second hand in a shop.
i did wonder why this started to happen.

so if this is true what happens to ppl who say spend 1000 on a collection of games say over 8 months and then they drop there ps3 and it break in to a million unreparable pices? not only will they pay for a new console but also for there new games.and shops that sell games dont tend to keep all the old titles just new.Originally posted by W_Parmenter

I would like to clarify that [the Playstation 3 locking out used game discs] is false speculation and that Playstation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any Playstation 3 console.Comment

This isn't even about PC games, it's just about consoles and handheld systems.
Because of the nature of PC Games, and the fact that the data on game discs is easily transferrable/copyable, the only thing you're really buying at a store when you buy a game is a license to play the game. EULA anyone? And that EULA is linked to the CD key not the game in the box. So obviously you can't just take back the box and CDs expecting someone else to be able to play that game. There's not much stopping you from continuing to play the game even after you supposedly 'sold' the game to someone else.
However for stuff like console games selling your old games does work because it's much much harder to duplicate the game data, which is why when you buy it and try to play it you're not subject to having to agree to any EULAs.Comment
