    to anybody that knows ranges

    ive a few questions that will help me out with this game about ranges.

    what range does the 6 and 8 mean 600meters and 800meters is my guess and the dashes on the scope around 6&8 mark would be 5&7?

    and for the grenade launcher ive no idea what the markings mean at all ive always just guessed the range to shoot at and am still pretty bad at it if anybody has info on this it would be helpfull.

    thank you in advance

    I don't think the scope marks are accurate. Do a search on bullet drop for more information.

      You know, someone should ask about bulletdrop in the Dice Q&A section. Some claim to have demonstrable proof of it while others can reliably demonstrate that it's just random deviation.

      It would be nice if DICE would give us a definitive answer.

      Personally, I think it's just random deviation. The markings on the scope seem to be cosmetic only. I do know for a fact (from hours and hours of use) that with the G36C in single shot mode, there is no bullet drop. (I love that gun.. better than a sniper's gun any day! :p)

        G36C is very good, but there is nothing more deadly then a trained sniper believe me, i've seen it

        they guy sniped all round and he ended with 90 points, he was very good

          Ok. I'm going to comment on this... again.

          I am 100% certain that there is bullet drop. The reason most people don't think that there is bullet drop is because they shoot at close range.

          Bullet drop calculations:
          Bullet Travel Time (seconds): t = Distance / 1000
          Bullet drop (meters): D = -5t^2

          50m = -0.0125m
          100m = -0.05m
          150m = -0.1125m
          200m = -0.2m
          250m = -0.3125m
          300m = -0.45m
          350m = -0.6125m
          400m = -0.8m
          450m = -1.0125m
          500m = -1.25m

          I'm guessing that a soldier is about 2m tall. If you really want to be convinced start at 300 meters and work outwards with a friend. Also keep in mind that aiming upward and downward can alter the bullet travel time changing the bullet drop.

          If you still don't believe me edit usrif_m24.tweak in your Objects_server.zip file. Change ObjectTemplate.zoom.addZoomFactor 0.2 to something like ObjectTemplate.zoom.addZoomFactor 0.02. Start a local server and start shooting stuff. You'll see there is ALWAYS bullet drop. You can change the bullet speed as well.

          All this and the fact that DICE commented before the game ever came out that there was definately projectile physics: http://www.realityfriends.com/forum/...4a1f9a f180f21

          4. Will the sniper scope have adjustable zoom? Will elevation and windage be modelled along with ballistics (bullet drop)?

          A: Sniper rifles do not have adjustable zoom. Projectiles will drop over distance.

            Oh, okay. Cool. I don't play the sniper kit except in emergencies, but I am glad to be informed that DICE has indeed already confirmed this. I stand corrected.

              So now if someone can notepad the game file that deals with bullet drop, and tells the bullet how far to drop and at what distance to do so that would be even better.

                could a mapper make a really simple 'Rifle Range' map with bullseye targets at 100m, 200m, 300m etc so that people can practice this in SinglePlayer pls?

                  I can't exactly give you that, but I can give you a really good guess.

                  All of the weapon tweak files have a velocity line: ObjectTemplate.velocity 1000

                  They have probably used simple physics formulas... if so:

                  If your distance to a target is 1000 meters then t = 1. (I'm assuming meters per second)

                  (A) Acceleration for gravity = -10 m/(sec^2)
                  (V) Vertical Velocity at time t = -10t + Initial Velocity
                  (D) Height drop at time t = -5t^2 + (Initial vertical Velocity)t + Initial Height

                  Pretty simple formula, but I'm willing to bet that is what is used in the game.

                  What gets kind of weird is when you fire up or down, which actually changes the velocity of the bullet during travel time. Firing upward at a large angle should have more of a bullet drop than firing strait at a target, because it takes longer for the bullet to get there. Firing at a downward angle should have less bullet drop, since the bullet will get there faster. I can give you some vector formula for determining bullet drop at different angles, but that might be going to far... if I have not gone to far already.

                    I would LOVE to have one of these. I tried to do it, but I'm not very handy with the map editor.

                      Take a look at my "Proof of bullet drop" thread here:

                      Most people agree that I´ve shown the existance and explained bullet drop pretty well, a minority doesn´t believe my reasoning until "the gods of DICE" have spoken themselves.

                        Holy ****. Hard....core.

                        I love the "simple physics formulas" part. I haven't seen physics in years. It's tough enough to complete a 1040 come tax time.

                        Sprinkled among the immature pnwd/w00t/1337/n00b garbage posts, we find gems like this. Good stuff...keep em coming.

                        Seeing all that math made me sport wood. haha...

                          there is a bullet drop in the game, but it is so small you actualy never ancounter problems with it .

                          Even when sniping, most sniping happens between 200-400m , where bullet drop is like minimal .

                            The numbers on the scope probably represent mils. A mil is an angular unit of measure that represents 1 meter at 1000 meters. This is used to determine range to a target. For example, if the average soldier is 2 meters tall, and his image occupies 20 mils in my scope, he is about 100 meters away. Range = 1000 * Height / mils. Because most humans are very near 1 meter from crotch to top of head this formula can be simplified to R = 1000/M when using this measurement. There are 6400 mils in a circle. My guess is that this makes no difference in BF2 marksmanship ..

                              You were easily convinced? :S The interview is from february 2005. Point is, the blachhawk had rocketpacks in early trailers of BF2 too ;]]

                              IRL those marks probably stand somehow for the distance, as the M82A1/M95 is a long-range sniper. Anyhow, it isn't used in the game. Range in game sucks, it's not real IMHO :P
