I'm just wondering: Are every BF2 player just a noobspraying pointwhore or are you in it for the game?

The reason is this: The web is filled with good costum maps but there's nobody playing them! Why? I can assure you, some of the custum maps are far better than the vanilla BF2maps, yet still I find that too few plays them at any given time. Far too often I have found myself firing up a local server with just me on it just to be able to see the map.

Any of you even heard of the wonderful BF2mod Battlefield2Nights?

So I've been thinking: Why is it like this?
* - Does the average BF2player know that there is custom maps for his game? * - Is the average BF2player only concern how many points and badges he gets? * - Is the process of getting and installing costum maps to difficult for the player to take the work installing maps.( it is really not ) * - Is the player unsure where he can find servers for the map?
* - Is it all EA's fault as they, as opposed to HL2 and UT2004, have decided to pretend that there is no map/mod community ( and in that action deny you the joy of a good mod.) * - a lot of other reasons as well.

If you would enjoy trying something new and fun give the maps a try. I'm also sure that everyone who has got maps and servers up and running wil be just very glad to inform you of where and how. You won't regret it.

Finally: Any of you want to take part in a experiment? You have perhaps noticed EA's lack of interest in maps and mods? Compare them to earlier mentioned HL2 and UT2004 as really good examples of the opposite. All of you, yes every last one of you; download some maps and keep trying to play them over the net, I'd bet you see this: Within weeks ( perhaps less ), EA would turn mod/map friendly and start whoring up to the community. Within a month they'd start up EA COSTUM MAP SERVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( ahhhh, I'd roll around on the floor grinning an evil grin and laughing my guts out at this point in the experiment! )

And all of yoyu who already plays maps/mods, throw in your IP's and links to maps here. Please.

Simply put: I'm frustrated that I find so few to play with outside the KJubra Dam, and would really like to play withyou elsewhere, MeKong River anyone, or El Alamein at night?

I play custom maps during Tournement style play, But when it come to "pubbin" stock ranked maps are Jammin.

how do you know? How many times have you actually played custom maps with 50 people? We have been making, testing, releasing custom maps for the past 6 months, and every time we release a map pack, the servers are full for the first 2-3 weeks, and then they are all empty. Now we have a Totalbf2 clan which plays custom maps 24/7. You don't like them? Fine, but don't judge them without playing them with people. Come to our meetings, join us, play for 15 minutes and i guarantee you, you will not want to play vanilla bf2 maps.

Vanilla Bf2 maps are good, no doubt about that. The problem is, they have been out there for so LONG, now people basically memorized what to do, and that results in pointwhoring, teamkills, less teamwork.

Once you are in mashtuur in american side, you run for the blackhawk
Once you are in Gulf of Oman MEC side, before fighting the enemy, you fight your team to get in the bomber plane
Once you are in Sharqi, the first thing you do is to get in AH-12
Once you are in karkand, you either get in the tank or camp in USMC spawn hill and nade spam the street

And so and on and on. The point isn't how custom maps are good. The point is they bring diversity, they bring competitiveness because when you are in a new map, its harder to win the battle, you need to use your brain more, practice more, discover new things, new strategies.

I say to everyone to give it a try, join us, no requirements or strict rules, just try for 15 minutes, and you will not want to go back to vanilla bf2.

bad ping? We have world's one of the best server providers' servers. Both in Europe and in USA.

You ll soon realize rankings are not that fun, they will get boring. I have almost 300 hours, i m first sargeant, i have all the veteran badges, all the ribbons, i have every unlock except engineer, all in 3 months, then it's all boring. That's when custom maps comes into play, they will keep this game alive like DC and POE kept bf1942 alive.

i hate custom maps because you have to DL them and Install them, in Joint Ops you could just join a Custom Map and bang your in it.

wow laziness...

The reason is because custom maps are over 50 sometimes even 60 MB. If what you are saying was possible in BF2, imagine what would happen when 3-4 people download the map when 50 people are playing in the server. Also downloading from the game server while in the game would result in at least 50% less performance compared to your internet browser.

I mean i understand every other reason not to play custom maps even though i disagree with each and every one of them, but the reason you are saying is just very weird.

Making those maps takes days, weeks and most of the time it takes over 1-1.5 month. It involves great deal of work, test, dedication, sacrifice. I made maps myself, i tested them and i know what is involved. And when someone says they don't wanna play because they are too lazy to click a link and download (not even install it yourself, they all have installers), it does hurt.

FYI, we have map packs that have 6 maps each and it comes with an installer, all you do is clicking the installer. So 1 click to link to download, 1 click to install. and it's too hard for you to do 2 clicks?

I agree there that the trouble with custom maps is that you have to manually download there. Won't EA ever learn? Damn it! It has been AGES since other understood that you have to provide a system where the maps that the players don't have will be automatically downloaded from the game server if need be (Unreal Tournament does it and here I don't write about UT2K3 or UT2K4, just plain old outdated ugly UT from way back when).

If EA is willing to open is eyes to shear reality and start doing sensible things like this I can assure you there would be more quality custom maps around and players willing to play them since it would be so easy to try them. Now if they wish to extract some more Euros or Dollars from us by pretending they booster pack/map pack are worth the money every 6 months, to hell with that! That's not the way you build a community and support it.

Damn it, players have been buying UT, UT2K3 and UT2K4 not just to play UT but to play all the mods out there and this keeps pumping money into the bank account of UT editor/developpers. Now if you want to keep asking money for each and every map/bonus pack then you'll soon turn a wonderful game with a massive and long term selling potential in a nice commercial one shot venture and not in a mid/long term JackPot!

Aradiel: Mostly agree with you. But I've been looking at what is seemingly a pattern. Take Sims and Sims2. EA pushes out expansion after expansion, milking the cashcow. Take BF2. EA already had started making ads and waves for BF2:SF before BF2 hit the shelves, in order to milk the moneycow. Take Sims2 and BF2. EA has not released in any way a true set of modding tools willingly to the community and nurtured the potent force of 1000'a of modders. They have released the minimum of what you'd expect and thats it. No "Make something unreal" or mod/map supportive articles ala Steams updating news which flash up every so often.

I think EA places their bets on the gamer being dumb and lazy, so that whenever they tire of their vannilla bf2 and bf2:sf they buy the next expansion instead of getting their kicks from installing new costum maps and mods. BTW:Theoretically the next expansion comes in 5-7 months. Take a look at what happened to Far Cry for an example of what can happen if the modcommunity gives up the game or does not recieve adequate support. Far Cry died way too early

Well that must be a splendid clan then? From as far as I know, clans only play standard BF2 maps. I have yet to see any tournament with money involved having custom-maps in the maplist. I think that's a reason enough. It can be fun to drop in and play a custom-map every once in a while, but not more than the standard maps.

1. too lazy to find, download, and install them
2. not enough people play them
3. they don't count towards global ranks

I have tried custom maps before. It was a total bf2 map pack. Once I had downloaded and installed it, it just made BF2 crash everytime I tried to play on one of the custom maps.

Add to that the 'modified content' errors that have plagued alot of people trying to install recent patches, I've just decided to leave it.

The BF2 program seems to me to be too fragile to be using mods and such.

It's a shame really, but for me it seems to be more trouble than its worth.:cry:
