I use a table-mic, mounted on the top of my monitor and Sennheiser HD-202 headphones, not a headset but I've been using it ever since I discovered that headsets, suck, they break, and you've got the CS-nerd-tag all over you. When I think of headsets I still think of HeatoN, rly.

I have these connected to x-fi xtreme. Sound is awesome so much better than stereo headphones and onboard sound.

Ok you want a set of headphones that will blow you away?!? Go here: http://www.listentobelieve.com/ltb-ac97-m.html (They also make a usb model.) I sware to God, I had been looking for a set of 5.1 surround sound headphones that was worth a damn! Went to best buy but everything I bought was crap!!! So an old friend told me about these (friends don't let friends listen to crappy 5.1 headphones!). I have had them for about 2 months now. My score is ALOT better. I can pinpoint EXACTLY where you are after you shoot or when you are walking up on me. They are not that bad in price to other 5.1 headphones (like $70 I believe) but the difference is well worth the price.

I had an altec lansing headset, and the sound quality was really good (same as audio 90's), but they hurt my ears like crazy.

From the factory, they had way to much pressure on my ears.

Those look like they'd be good almost commercial grade(like a radio disc jockey might use), however, I think I might have to remove my earrings in order to use them. The ones I use now are by labtec without all that padding and they don't interfere with my earrings. They seem to work fine. I can hear people trying to sneak up on me as is so I don't know if I really need any new ones. Good info though and thanks for sharing it. ^_^

EDIT: And Fledermaus, mine survived "Durability Test #17", I was able to re-attach the microphone and coil the wire back up inside the ear-thing.

I've got a DSP500 from Plantronics. Didn't have the money to put down for a sound card + good headphones, and my onboard with a cheap pair of Radio Shack wrap-arounds just wasn't cutting it. For $60 they sound great and the mic pickup is superb.

I think I'll be buying a sound card for my next system, though. I think I'll need something better than onboard sound if I'm going to be capturing video if I want decent quality.

Buy these if you don't mind purchasing a new set every 6 months
Its hard to find a long lasting, inexpensive headset these days. I've switched to a monitor mounted microphone as of last week.

I use the same set that Gabe Newell used when he was working on HL2. These are simply AMAZING 5.1 sound headphones but very expensive.
