Bah. I can't count how many times I've shot a person of the type sneaky
specOpsery lurking behind a friendly tank. If a tank is supported by snipers (decent ones, that is..) you have pretty good cover from infantry.

And sniper battles, with three or so on the opposing team... Hilarous. I LOVE a good sniperbattle

I anyone want to snipe, I'll see you in the battlefield, and you'll (hopefully) see my bullet

Re: Forcing myself into suckiness... raising hours as Sniper

Hmm ive got my sniper vet badge but i wouldnt say im a good sniper at all, ive got a 47.09% acc rating and yes shock horror i find the M95 to be the best!.

I took at peek at your stats and your a far better sniper than me so sup to you if yah take this onboard.

How i got vet sniper? i played Wake A LOT.

Find the spots where you know the enemy spawn wait for your side to pull an attack and cover them while they assault. Youll get a lot of kill assists and maybe a few nice headshots.
I wonder about all these ppl who say the rifles are innacurate..., how many of you take into acc the range at which your sniping first before even lining up your potential targets?

I find the m95 is leathal at 200M and below, above that takes some adjustment but then if your covering your teams assault from about 200M then you wont have to worry too much about the enemy bursting through and messing you up.

Claymores .. lofl you could save yourself a whole world of TK pain by changeing your tactical view of using the claymore.
Use it as a specops would C4 or treat it as a static grenade.
Ie: if the enemy spots you and is close dont drop one and hope he runs into it, lure him in. If you have cover and they are following you follow a pattern of been chased.., get me?
Ok run around a building.., they follow you .. run around the next corner.., they follow you .. into a claymore youve just dropped. By the time they realised how theyve been lured then your long gone with a very satisfiying grin on yer mush
If you must plant them to protect your back/front/flank chuck a grenade to wipe em out before you leave, you can always get supplied up later.

hope that helped .. maybe, maybe not, from one n00b sniper to another :P

I read some interview with DICE, this summer, where they said that the engine itself doesn't support bullet-drop. I just believe that the "bulletdrop"-movies out there are made of astonishing luck-shots proving that the accuracy really suck.

Re: Forcing myself into suckiness... raising hours as Sniper

Here is my advise in a nutshell.

                NOVICE: 0 - 500 kills with a sniper rifle.
                1. If you move forwards/backwards, move Left/right, or zoom in you must wait one or two seconds for your accuracy to settle. Turning left or right does not effect your accuracy.
                2. Aim for the body or neck, but not the head.
                3. Don't shoot at anything over 200m.
                4. Don't shoot at anything moving.
                5. Towers, Buildings, Cranes, and other elevated sniper points are NOT your friend, yet.
                6. Claymores are you best friend and worst enemy. They are a great way to get kicked from a server and a great way to catch the guy that is coming to kill you. Don't use them where friendlies might soon be lurking.
                7. 75m and less: If the first shot does not kill your target switch to your pistol and finish him off.
                8. Use plants, rocks, shadows, and other environment for concealment when they are available and keep in mind that grass and such will disappear at a distance.
                9. Use cover / concealment when you move and try to keep at least %50 of your sprinting stamina in reserve for an emergency.
                10. Concealment is not cover, understand the difference and you'll live longer.
                11. Keep moving because everyone hates snipers and they'll be comging to kill you soon. You're next position should have a good line of sight for your old position, a good rule of thumb in the beginning is to move whenever you have to load a new clip or are certain you've been spotted.
                12. When you know they are coming for you leave them a claymore as a parting gift.
                13. If you know they are going to kill you drop a claymore and take them with you.
                14. If you have chosen a tower or such, see item 5, make sure the tip of your gun is not hanging over the edge.
                15. Its great to spot stuff for your teammates, but if the enemy is anywhere near you the enemy can hear you.
                16. Don't die with extra ammo, shoot at everything. (Except for tanks and APCs)
                17. When you've been hit don't wait to see if they can do it again sprint to cover immediately.

                AVERAGE: 500 - 2500 kills with a sniper rifle.
                1. You should be good enough to get plenty of headshots now.
                2. When aiming for moving targets let the target move into your sights.
                3. Know where your target and bullet is going to be and aim at that position and fire. (See Bullet Travel Time & Bullet Drop in Reasonings)
                4. Understand how shooting accuracy works in game. The book is wrong so check your .con files. http://wiki.bf2s.com/weapons/comparison has a great explanation of how it works. (See Accuracy in Reasonings)
                5. Do what works for you and don't listen to what anyone else has to say. I've seen snipers take out whole squads.
                6. Medics, squad leader, snipers, everything else. (Order in which to take out a squad)
                7. Make sure you clear any remaining claymores once you cap a flag.
                8. Aren't those gunners on the top of tanks and vehicles fun to shoot.
                9. You should be good enough to keep engineers and special forces from blowing up armor and assets. Help your teamates.
                10. You may have noticed that when you are zoomed your mouse seems to click into place when you are zoomed. Get a mouse with better resolution. The one you have is messing up your sniping.
                11. It is very important for snipers to be able to get into position fast and become invisible.
                12. Make your advisaries feel comfortable. Wait until they are in a vunerable position with nowhere to run before you start shooting them.

EXPERT: 2500 + Kills with a sniper rifle
                1. If you don't have your knife and pistol Veteran badges, you are missing out. The knife and pistol should be good friends with every sniper.
                2. You should know where all of the helicopters and jets spawn.
                3. If you have not done it yet, try commander hunting. It is very rewarding and can turn the tide of a round.
                4. You should know the different purposed for the different sniper rifles.
                OTHER:
                1. The m95 is NOT for making sure your plane or helicopter is available.
                2. The m95 is not a good short range weapon.
                3. High mouse resolution makes a difference when using sniper rifles.
                4. The m95 is loud. Use your ears to locate other snipers, they are using theirs to locate you.
                5. The m95 can take out vehicles, helicopters, and aircraft shoot at everything.
                6. You can take out helicopter pilots, but its more luck than skill. You're best chance is to kill them before they take off, but this usually only works until the first guy you killed respawns.
                7. The ghille(sp?) suit is confusing up close. Jump into the middle of a squad and use your pistol, if they are standing, or your knife, if they are laying down. The knife tactic works great when medics are reviving someone.

                Reasonsings...
                Bullet drop calculations:
                Bullet Travel Time (seconds): t = Distance / 1000
                Bullet drop (meters): D = -5t^2

                Accuracy:
                M95:
                Minimum Deviation: 5
                Standing / Couching / Prone Modifier: 2/1.5/0.8
                Zoom Modifier: 0.02
                Recoil: 4
                Recoil Zoom Modifier: 0.25

                M24:
                Minimum Deviation: 5
                Standing / Couching / Prone Modifier: 2/1.5/0.8
                Zoom Modifier: 0.01
                Recoil: 4
                Recoil Zoom Modifier: 0.25

                SVD & Type 88:
                Minimum Deviation: 5
                Standing / Couching / Prone Modifier: 2/1.5/0.8
                Zoom Modifier: 0.02
                Recoil: 4
                Recoil Zoom Modifier: 0.25
                Deviation = (((<Minimum Deviation> * <Stance>) + <Additional Shots>) * <Zoom Mod>) + (<Recoil> * <Recoil Zoom Mod>)
The m24 is twice as accurate, but in my experience you can hit anything you can see with the sniper rifles, if you are zoomed and prone. One thing that snipers tend to forget when they are zoomed is that forward/backward and left/right movement degrades accuracy. Unzooming the rifle and rezooming it also degrades accuracy, but recovery is much quicker. This is more obvious on guns with the dynamic crosshairs.

Rifles: m24 - The most accurate gun in the game. Use this rifle for shooting soldiers at long distances.
m95 - can shoot through cockpit glass and blow up different types of items. Use this rifle for every day use.
SVD & Type 88 - These are great squad rifles. If you follow your squad at 100 meters this will keep the enemy from sneaking up on them. They are also great for killing snipers that are guarding the points you are trying to capture.
All of the sniper rifles will shoot through wooden and chain fences.

All of that being said... experience trumps any advise. There are several different ways to play the sniper kit, find one that fits your play style.

I find it easier to land a headshot with the SVD than the M95 (maybe because I'm expecting the M95 to be effective at longer range, either way, in action I - most of the time - pick the SVD rather than the M95.

I find the Type 88 and SVD both great rifles for medium range (they both have exactly the same stats; on the crosshair differs).

Claymores are ok, but there are always those stupid teammates that run into them. Most annoying is medics running upto you because you're only at half health; they either give away your position or trip over your mines.
Other than that; claymores are fun in maps like Cleansweep where there are tons of FAVs/DPVs. Laying claymores on the road can result in killing the driver and his buddy.

Overall, I find that the SVD/Type 88 are more accurate than the M95 at the first shot. Assuming a headshot with either rifle is a kill; I apt to choose the SVD/Type 88 above the M95.

The M24 is the best sniper rifle in my opinion, but it's a bit too accurate in comparison to the other rifles, such as the M95 (but also in revelation with the Dragunov/Type 88)

One of the best things about the M95: blowing up barrels! It will either kill or **** off your enemy

The pistol is your friend. If you have landed a shot on your target with the M95/M24 at medium-close range, grab your pistol and finish him off!

                    Sounds help a bunch.

I think they should increase the snipers zoom vieuw so they can actually shoot players without the player even being able to see them cuz they are to far away, that way it would actually be sniping from cover and distance...not like what I do with my medic rifle or my ERYX.

I agree with you the Sniper kit is too dependant on other classes to be used effectively.
Just as in real life when your shot you move around like crazy(if you still can).

This is significant because, prior to last night, I had logged only 2 hours as a Sniper. Compared to the average 60 hours playing each of the 6 other kits, my sniper time is all but nonexistent.

I realize that I could just play as a Sniper and fly a helicopter the entire time, but that's almost less fun than forcing myself to learn to play Sniper as a Sniper. Almost.

                          Here're my initial impressions:

                          Equipment
                          • M24 is wonderful. This is not a revelation for most, but it's worth repeating; it's accurate, powerful and predictable. Settle time is reasonable, scope is nice.
                          • Chinese sniper rifle (whatever it is) sucks. This is also not a revelation for most, and it's not worth discussing further.
                          • SVD is a so-so middle ground, but I rarely land headshots and I might as well be using a carbine if it's going to take 3 bullets to kill someone.
                          • M95 is heavy and "awkward". Settle time is much higher than M24, but at least I can land one-shot kills with it. Very loud.
                          • I <3 claymores. It's a shame that Snipers only get 2, because they're simply magical as long as your teammates don't try to lick them.

                          Gameplay
                          • I found myself getting campy a lot, confirming my earlier impressions that snipers aren't really "encouraged" to capture flags. Defense is do-able as long as there's no armor.
                          • Speaking of defense, I had a pretty amazing run defending the first flag at Karkand last night. Between the claymores, pistol and grenades, the Sniper is very well equipped to do up-close, dirty combat against most enemies - I bagged 6 kills before I got overwhelmed and the CP fell.
                          • The biggest drawback to playing the Sam Fisher Sniper (sneaky, pistoly, knifey) is longevity. Only 2 claymores and only 1 workable CQC firearm mean that it doesn't take long for an oncoming onslaught of enemies to outpace the claymores and the pistol's clip. Big difference from playing Spec Ops or Assault, where each can sustain upwards of 10+ kills over a much longer period of time.
                          • I actually did do some sniping, but results were inconsistent, particularly over long distances where I fiddled with bullet drop adjustments. Sometimes repeated behavior yielded different results, and some targets just couldn't be hit no matter how hard I tried (I traded 2 clips with an enemy on Zatar and neither of us could hit the other - and we were both sitting still).
                          • Sniper isn't a bad kit, but I still maintain that other kits (Medic, Spec Ops) can do the exact same work (infantry suppression over distances) just as effectively and be more flexible in other roles. I'd love to see the Sniper evolve into a sneakier, lightweight CQC type, but that's not going to happen.
                          • Any scout-like role that the Sniper could play is pretty well trumped by the Commander's toys, which are far more powerful.
                          • The Sniper's camo suit is ri-goddamn-diculous on maps like Karkand. There's nothing like a big, fluffy, leafy, dark-green suit on a map full of medium tans and browns. Why the hell doesn't the guy get a different suit for different terrains?

Respond with your own experiences, comments, or any tips that you think will help me out.
You don't really understand the use of a sniper I'm guessing. They can be used for many things but racking up tons of kills isn't their job.

1 - snipers are good vs snipers. You want to ignore any other infantry until you have them dead. They can hide pretty well with those suits and they will annoy you, and your teammates, if you don't kill them.

2 - scouting any sneak attacks or big assualts. An affect sniper doesn't even need to shoot if he just does the good old Q-click to identify targets for his teammates. 10-1, if you identify a target, your teammates will have them dead in no time.

3 - may sound funny but tank gunners! it's suicide for any infantry to let loose at a tank gunner, they'll get blown to peices by the tank itself. A sniper is far more safer shooting from a far as the tank driver himself won't notice that a sniper is trying to kill his gunning bud. This is a good thing to do as it makes the tanks "protective line of sight" down to only one person. This gives an easyer chance for soldiers to work their way out of the tanks area, have spec-ops easyly go up and C4, or have an anti-tank take the tank out with out being spotted by that gunner.

                          ----Sniper Rifles----

the M95 and M24 are the snipers that are made not to get close, just stay back and shoot as you'll most likely hit ur target. The only problem about these rifles as they make you have to take your sights off the scope after every shot. This means that if you didn't kill the person, you can't c where he/she ran 2... that could mean death for you.

As for the Chinese and SVD rifles, they are the more "squad friendly" snipers as they allow for better close up snipeing and you keep the scope up after u shoot which gives u a chance to gun down people before they can find you. But they come with there problems as they aren't very good long ranged weapons.

Remeber, a sniper isn't about getting tons of kills. It's mostly taken out the most dangerous targets that could really damage your team. Also, it's about scouting out 2, thats what most of it's about, scouting....

PS: remeber that the M95 CAN shoot down Heli pilots

You're right - I don't know what Snipers are good for. Other kits can do a Sniper's job just as well, if not better, and still perform in situations where Snipers have to sit and watch.

I believe that being a sniper is a style of gameplay that can be executed with other kits, not a specific kit itself. But that's old news.

I simply artillery'd the enemy into oblivion as a Commander until I got the required 22 Kills.

The sniper rifle is very handy at getting rid of the enemy spec ops who wants to blow up the stuff.

The SVD is the best battlefield rifle because of it's ability to stay on target compenstates for the nerfted bullets that dont take enemies down in one shot. The Barret for example should be extremly lethal at well over a mile against humans.

My advice, go Commander and simply rack up the kills. From Advanced to Expert should not be difficult when you use the arty correctly in certain maps.

The big challenge is getting the 100 hours in each class.

Sniper kit being an inferior class opposed to medic, assault etc. I might agree on, but being sniped 5 times in a row can be a really pain in the ass. And I aim at being such a pain:p

In the matter of the rifles, I believe that the M24 is best, although the dragonouv and the other short-range rifles are perfect for urban areas. They'r supposed to be "Squad-guns" in the first place, not 800m+ rifles.
