Re: Forcing myself into suckiness... raising hours as Sniper

I really don't like the sniper class...why take 2 claymores and gun that has to be used at a ridiculous range to dominate when I can be...let's say, engineer and get 5 mines, a wrench, and...ummm... another gun that has to be used at a ridiculous range to dominate.

HOWEVER, I have played sniper once recently when I bailed out of a heli (after it was thoroughly damaged) and onto a roof. I started my own squad. I was a medic at the time, but when a sniper joined my squad, he killed himself so I could take his kit. He was a heck of a teamplayer, just wish I could remember his name. He deserves an honorable mentioning. I got about 4 kills with the m95 before I went down.

I'm not crazy about playing as snipers...or having them around. Not that they are like jets, helis, or arty when you don't have proper cover in that you CAN avoid them and use tactics to counter them, but they ruin a lot of good outdoor fights. It seems like you need to hop around like you are playing UT whenever you are outside nowadays (umm...in BF2).

You should have killed yourself, then he takes your kit, then he revives you. Voila, you have the M95 and he saves points. Unless he wanted to respawn with the M95 but still let you have one... which is probably more likely.

How would that have worked? Then he would have been a medic and I would have been the sniper. The point was so we could have both been snipers.

I find the M95 to be wildley innaccurate vs other snipers, and yea the M24 is the best for long range kills, but I think the SVD Dragunov is the best of the sniper rifles for urban areas.
You can pop shots off quickly, an amazing assest. This where the M24 would get beaten, rate of fire, an SVD can pick you off before you get yer second shot off, and the SVD is great for long narrow hallways.

As I always use to say...

              Sniping all the way!

DICE just need to work a little on the accuracy, and that's what they'll do in the next patch. I wish I could say that I had 60 hours of playtime with each kit, so that I could get veterans for all the kits. On the other hand, 460 hours while having like 5 on the others is pretty cool too, in a way ^^

Someone mentioned that the SVD is great for urban-maps where you can "pop" shots off faster than the SAW... Well, that kinda ruins the purpose of the sniper, doesn't it?

And I still hate DICE for making the G36C a better sniper than any of the weapons in-game.

*Sniper whistling atop of a crane (me)
                *Soldier running a 500 m++ below (you)
                *BOOM, Headshot.

I don't think the M24 needs to be adjusted in acccuracy...
It may be that i'm a sniper, but I still manages to get a decent score on maps like, say Karkand and Kubra dam, and having a jolly good time doing it.
Patience always wins out in the end. I once waited ten minutes on a crane before I got the kill, but it was damn satisfying

Btw, Splinter Cell style rocks, the game(s) rocks even more

Re: Forcing myself into suckiness... raising hours as Sniper

I'm prolly about the most useless sniper in existance. I've got 1 (count it), 1 fruggin kill with the damned sniper rifles.

It's just so not my cup of tea. It drives me crazy sitting back hunckered down and waiting for an opportunity to shoot at something. Generally, I need it either have my hair on fire running screaming at the enemy causing as much mayhem and confusion as possible before going down, OR need to be the sneaky arse back-capper moving carefully into position at undefended flags.

However, I have a bud that's a great sniper. We've been working ways out to boost his skills in terms of supporting mine. It's started to work out very well. I've actually taken to luring enemies down roads that he's got covered and when I hear him open up, it's time for me to pop out 'n spray (I tend to go support when we're doing this). He tends to get a lot of kill asists while I get flat out kills, but he's also saved my life repeatedly.
                  "Watch it!! On you're six!"
                  "Hu? Where?"
                  POP
                  Thud
                  "There"
                  "Thanks champ"

One of my longest kill streaks was on Strike at Karkand as a MEC Sniper, with the SVD.

Commander dropped a supply box next to one of the bushes on the second road to the left ( Second road to the right, if US. ). Crawled up between the bush and the box, and went to work with the SVD. Surprising how powerful it is at medium range.

Re: Forcing myself into suckiness... raising hours as Sniper

Snipers are insanely fun. And whoever said start off with the M95 then switch down to M24, that's great advice.
I had used the M95 all the time since I was a sniper and never realized how innacurate it can be compared to other sniper weapons such as the M24 until I used them(although the M95 can be very very useful). Once you get the hang of hitting the head..switching down to the M24 makes things so much smoother.

Practice and experience is what makes the sniper fun. Eventually you'll start to master it and it gets almost too easy. I never aim for anything but the head, and evading the enemy by moving from place to place makes your chances of survival so much greater because you have a huge advantage of range and accuracy. My last round I played was a 32 player Karkand and it ended with my K/D ratio being 21 kills, 0 deaths, and having the top score(no vehicles whatsoever).

It's a great kit, it just takes practice to get used to it and to see how powerful it can be.

That image pretty much sums up the nature of snipers in Battlefield games. In BFV snipers were simply the most pointless and useless class. They couldn't cap flags for beans, and it was incredibly easy to avoid sniper fire at any range: just keep moving and use the trees for cover. Most of the fighting in that game took place at ranges where other weapons were at least as potent as the sniper rifle.

And still people insisted on using the class. Maybe some people are too lazy to want to be on the frontlines. Maybe they think camping on the edge of the map will boost their KDR. But I'm sticking with the theory that the sniper class inherently draws hordes of noobies with delusions of grandeur. (I can remember a squeaky-voiced adolescent who frequented one of my favorite servers and simply refused to play anything but sniper...ever.)

In a sense I’m glad that sniping is represented in BF2 the way it is. It’s actually somewhat hard to use the sniper rifles effectively (well, except for the M24, that is), and I think this has turned away a sizable fraction of the wanna-be sniper crowd. Special ops has (from my experience) stepped up to be the class that you have more of on your team than you need, but at least special ops is a flexible class that proves itself useful in many situations. Also an improvement, sniping in BF2 isn’t totally pointless; I’ve seen good snipers do a good job of killing/suppressing enemy infantry at range, but the class is strictly a supporting role, essentially useless when used in the “traditional” snipe- a mile- away- from- the- frontline- while- my- teammates- are- getting- wasted- fashion.

I find my best sniping runs come when Im actually...running. When you dont just sit around in one place. The battles are constantly shifting in this game and you have to shift with them. Just know good places at each location of the map and youll be picking them off a long time. The most importent thing about being a sniper is knowing the maps well. You HAVE to know the maps well to know the places you can run that are most open but still not as visible (you have the accuracy advantage over range over other kits so play that) and all the good places for cover. Also importent is knowing what parts of the map most lend themselves to the sniping skill. For example the bridge in Karkand is a snipers paradice!

As a side note to get a perfect headshot every time DO NOT aim for the head, aim for the neck, its instant kill.

Settle time is much higher than M24
Somebody tell me what settle time is....

the chinese sniper rifle (type 88) and the SVD doesnt suck, u just dont know how to use them...
Bah, they are both inaccurate, and weak. So they can fire fast...who cares? The bullet deviation or recoil or whatever is insane, fire two shots fast and your accuracy just dies right there.

In the time it takes to get two accurate svd shots...you can fire the m24 or m95 and kill the guy. The difference is that two shots to the chest against armor will kill with m95 or m24. 2 shots to chest with svd will not.

And as for the m95 vs. m24 debate I know alot of people think the m24 is better, but I have got way more kills with the m95.

M24 advantage is that its more accurate and it has lower settle time...whatever that is (im guessing its the time it takes to steady your rifle to get off a more accurate shot).

M95 takes your health down to 2 bars whether you are armor or non armor. M24 does not. M95 will kill you after you have taken just ONE shot from anything else, or if you fell a bit. M24 will not (at least not in the same way).

I cannot tell you how many times I have lived because I had like 80% health left and i got hit by an m24 and said: HA! you should have been using the m95, then you would have killed me!

O yeah and m95 can shoot through helicopter glass, and YES, I have shot helicopter pilots out of midair when they were NOT hovering....they were moving.
