Re: Sign here for true widescreen support.

DICE do NOT support widescreen resolutions - this will give the widescreeners an advantage so they have more peripheral vision. Alternately, support widescreen in such a way that they will have to have black frames on the side OR have the image squashed accordingly.

The vast majority of players have regular-proportioned monitors and there is no valid reason to give a minority a marked advantage over everyone else.

Widescreens were never introduced as game-monitors - they are not designed for it anyway with their low because of their low ms-ratings.

It's fine for Sudoku and Tetris, but it has no place in 3D FPS games. At least not yet.

    Cheers :-)

Any decent 3D FPS has widescreen support:

Doom 3, Quake 4, HAlf Life 2 and therfore CS: source... Toca 3 ( whilst his predeccesor TOCa 2 wouldnt showing that WS monitors are the must have nowadays )

      Colin MAcrae 04/05...

      Etc
      etc
      etc

NEarly 100% of games that are made and have been made through the past two years have WIdescreen support.

And a game like BAttelfield 2 has to have it.

Listen dear... did you consider an unfair advantage that Quake 2 implemented support for the new generation graphic cards ( voodoo 1 / voodoo rush 3DFX ) in 1997 that installed in our system would eye candied the game and boost performance a 200% ??

Cause the people that we have a voodoo card in that time where a much smaller minority than the people that actually own a WS monitor

And the advantage over regular graphic cards was far more bigger than the advantage of a WS monitor over a 4:3 one...

So please if you try to post arguments at leat post true ones.. not some stupid BS

People like you remind me of those that would neevr develop new alternatives , evolution and such.

They´ll stick in what they already know... neglecting development and future.

Re: Sign here for true widescreen support.

I posted earlier in this thread. I now (bought it about 6 months ago) have a 26 inch wide screen. The support for a wide screen should be avaiable for who ever wants it (the people who want to use a cheat do dont they). Its not that big of a deal to play with wide screen or without it in this game. The reason being that no matter what you have visable on the screen you can only pay attention to so much, and fire in one direction, at a time.
It would, I believe, turn out to be like the video card issue. The people who want to use the wide screen view will find a way to make it so. Even if it costs a lot more. After all, we all have purchased a better video card since we bought the game didnt we, I did. . . . . . . .Red

Spoken like a true non-widescreen owner. I just got my 24" Dell widescreen and I love playing BF2 on it even though the top and bottom is chopped. Wide screen is just better. Think about how your eyes work, in reality you can see more to the left and right than you can top to bottom.

why should everyone else have to conform to the low end equitment owners? your basicly saying dice should punish people who spend money on their pc equitment. whats next, you want them to ban anyone using crossfire or sli systems because they can get twice the framerates as you?

you want conformity and a equal playing field go play battlefield on the xbox, ill be playing on my e6700 conroe and 2 x1900's at 1920x1440. this isnt the world of $300 game counsoles.

The "advantage" that you would get from a proper widescreen would be very minimal. It's the same if you use higher resolution (or AA) against smaller resolution without AA. You can see more clearly further away but it is a very minimal advantage.

I don't see how the proper widescreens "advantage" is a problem in CS:S or I've never seen anyone complaining about it. I haven't noticed any difference in my personal "gaming performance" when I switched from 19" 4:3 to 26" 16:10. I do personally enjoy the natural widescreen view more than the keyholebox of 4:3 so maybe that's too much for some people :)

Re: Sign here for true widescreen support.

Widescreen users see around 20% more of the battlefield.

Thats a fairly decent amount. Lets couple that with the fact that BF2's horizon isn't curved, it's flat, you can see further into the distance the further away from the centre of the screen you are looking. So not only do you see wider, you see further.

Peripheral vision is often misunderstood as just crap foveal vision, but it's not. It's specifically geared to pick up things like movement, contrast, colour differences etc. Just look up retinal ganglion cells for info.

Comparing the edge widescreen gives to say sli or x-fi is also crap. Regarding x-fi, we are humans not voles, we are visual animals and 90% of our perception is visual. Regarding sli etc, lower detail is actually better, the clutter of long grasses is removed, shadows cannot hide enemy etc (there are no shadows).

Regarding widescreens becoming mainstream, bollocks. This year widescreens reached their historical peak of 2% of screen sales.

Just because some users have better gear than others already is not just cause to hand another serious advantage over to those with widescreen, that logic is seriously skewed.

Other games may support widescreen, but they don't all support a rank and stats system like BF2 that requires the element of fairness.

Anti cheating experts consider tweaking the fov (necessary for widescreen) as giving enough advantage to trigger a ban, thats why punkbuster has the variable pb_fov.

DICE have acknowledged that widescreens very easily could offer a serious competitive advantage, and as such have put any support on hold until this issue is decided.

If you guys want to offer a convincing argument for widescreen you're going to have to a lot better than the offerings here. I mean look at Keiths post just above here, he clearly has no clue at all about the display dynamics of the BF2 engine, or of vision itself.

Ironically, given the stats gayness that BF2 has become my post will probably have the opposite effect and cause a wave of sigs in support of widescreen due to point whores trying to up their spm, after all thats what it's all about, SPM.
