Seen another thread locked down that contained a "whine" about this. I thought it was an interesting issue that I believe has not been discussed yet on these forums. As most people are no doubt aware, the BF series is most well known for the fun vehicles that players can drive. Unfortunately, EVERYONE wants to drive. For the purpose of game balancing, each map has a certain amount of vehicles that can be driven which generally leaves a sizable amount of lone wofls with no ride(more on these guys in a bit).
Pretty much all vehicles have room for passengers, unfortunately, not everyone is kind enough to give a ride. In my personal experience though, I don't usually have problems getting a ride when I need one. Many people WILL give you rides when you ask for one(APCs and tanks are the usual exceptions), However, I am always wary of hopping in someone elses vehicle. You can never be for sure if the driver actually knows what he is doing, but atleast he can drop you off somewhere :). One thing I have noticed alot lately are lone wolf tank/apc dudes that camp uncap bases ranking up spawn kills. I don't blame these guys for lone wolfing. Tanks and APC's are already incredibly powerful even when they aren't being used to their full potential (squads, etc)
The key term here is "lone wolf". I believe that lone wolfing of tanks and APC's can be attributed to the boring passenger seats that are offered in these vehicles and the "balanced" amount of vehicles in each map. The lone wolf type of players have no interest in hopping in an APC because all they can do is watch the action and hope the driver lines you up for the perfect shot. However, You will always see a loaded Cobra or atleast one gunner on a BH because they are fun positions to play. There are lonewolfs in cobras too, but the gunner seat is so powerful that it usually forces people to get a gunner.
Which brings me to an earlier point: Everyone wants a vehicle for themselves. This is an undeniable fact of BF2 and this is why lone wolf apc/tanks/boats are so common. If there were enough vehicles on the map to accomodate every player, these problems would not be an issue. However, it would turn the game into all out vehicle combat ala Twisted Metal. Whether or not such a change would be bad or good for BF2 is debatable. I personally would not mind all out vehicle warfare. Infantry combat bores me. I've played too many (superior) FPS games to really get a kick out of it in BF2. I'm here for the supposed "revolution" in gameplay that the BF series brings to the table with vehicles.
So what happens to all the players that are stuck without a ride? Boring tactical CS style infantry combat with a few insta kill vehicles to worry about (armored awps). That's been done to death in numerous games. Alot of BF2 players are sick of CS (not me though :)) and the vehicles of BF2 offer a refreshing change of pace. Unfortunately, the extremely desireable vehicles are exactly what every player wants. This is why there's always going to be people camping for vehicles. Vehicles are the foundation of BF2.
BF2 maps: They are absolutly huge. This makes getting a ride essential. Who in their right mind likes walking across the whole map because there are no vehicles around? By the time you walk from the mec strip to the beachhead on oman, the round is either already over or you have died numerous times. This another reason why you see so many people waiting patiently for vehicles.
Squads: Squads really change the game into something totally different. In fact, most of the "rants" I stated previously are pretty much invalidated when you find a good squad. I have been on those rare squads before where everything clicks and you got a packed boat or APC en route to blow up some commander toys. It is quite a thrilling experience to see all your buddies in one vehicle getting ready to kick some ass. However, it's hard to get a decent squad going on pubs. Even when you do find a decent squad, it usually means domination for the other team as the score is 33123123 - 0 in favor of your team. I don't find any enjoyment in that kind of game play.
Sorry guys for the jumbled up appearence of this thread. It's late and I have illegal chemicals in my body.
