I was having problems with my parachute a few days ago. Thankfully it seems to have stopped now because it is quite embarrassing to fall to your death multiple times in one game. Your squad starts wondering what you're smoking and sometimes I even got kicked form the squad.

ya that happened to me too i would fall with out my parachute working and i would eat it so when i didnt work i jumpe and stered for vehicles so i can land in those but its all about the luck

I use to skydive and was airborne in the army (which are two entirely different animals). The army still uses chutes similiar to those used in WWII and they are somewhat steerable by "slipping" or pulling on the risers moving the chute side to side.

I've re-mapped my chute key too, but how can u re-map it to backspace when jump is backspace?

You mean your jump is spacebar right? :)
My bro uses the middle-mouse-button-click as parachute - seems to work well for him.
I still fumble around for the '9' key lol

And please map the chute key to BACKSPACE!
You probably keep missing the 9 key and don't even notice in the heat of the battle
I used to die ALOT when I had it on default "9"...

BACKSPACE = WALK BACK WARDS MAP IT TO ''w''
