Why exploiting the BF2 squad system sucks

I hope DICE takes care of a problem called "squadhopping", which is very annoying in BF2 at the moment. If you have never played a clan match, you might not know what I mean. Please read carefully, then you'll understand:

Squadhopping means that everyone on the map plays as a squadleader. In a 8vs8 game, that's no problem, every team can have 8 squads (if not even more, I dunno). So in Clanwars there are 8 Squadleaders walking around. If someone dies, he has not only the usual flags and his spawnleader to spawn at - he can just leave his squad, and join ANY squad where he wants to spawn in that moment. Afterwards he leaves the squad again and creates his own squad again (so people can use him as a spawn point again).

It is pretty obvious that this is an exploit not intended by the developers. People who REALLY want to use the built-in VoIP system have a great disadvantage, because they rely on hierarchical communication, teamplay and real tactics, instead of bland squadhopping.

The squad system speeds up the game by a great amount. But this exploit is just too much. You don't really need to attack well coordinated. If you have trained to "squadhop", then your attack will last much longer than it ever could usually - the squadleader cannot really die, because everyone's a squad leader. This advantage will outweigh any clever attack schemes or any perimeter defense. The only way to stop an attack now is to kill ALL the attackers within 15 SECONDS! If only one of them survives - ALL the others will spawn again, using the last survivor (being a squadleader of course) as a spawn point. That's plain stupid.

well IMHO, it's a part of the tactics too. not everyone knows how to "squadhopping" properly. by using that method, u may be able to heavily attack/defend a flag with a small group of people.

I definatly think there should be some sort of limiter on changing squads. I've seen some rather sick abuses of it the way things are now.

          What's the big deal?

It promotes teamwork, by making you make sure all the enemy soldiers in an area are dead, so more can't respawn where you killed 1 but not the other.

Tactics should be about REAL team coordination, not about learning all the secret exploits not mentioned in the manual (because the developers never intended it to happen this way). These exploitation tactics aren't even covered by that official Prima Game Guide.

IMHO tactics should not evolve around the secret knowledge of some exploits, but around REAL teamplay, well coordinated attacks, etc.

The deal is, this is a great disadvantage to those using the VoIP system.

And if tactics rely on knowledge about exploits, that's always a bad thing.

This problem could be solved easily by introducing some spawn delay after you change squads. This way the squad system could still be used and it would still encourage teamplay, which is one of the greatest things in BF2 IMHO, it's not like I want to lose that part of the game. But with some kind of spawn delay after changing the squad the gameplay would evolve more around "real" military tactics instead of exploit knowledge.

I agree that in its current form, the squad function is flawed. However, what kind of solution would you implement ? A restriction on how fast one could create or switch to another squad ? It's a little tricky, but I suppose even that would beat having to deal with seemingly unending waves of attackers. Good post...

LMAO EXPLOIT?!?!? wtf nub, is this your first run at clanmatches?

The correct term isn't "exploit" --- Its called "TACTICS". Using the SL system to its full power allows for incredible tactics in matches....you have to make sure an area is completely clean before capping a flag, and in 5v5 infantry matches we've been able to pull off things with the SL system that have allowed us to get to flags faster than our opponent / etc...

I wouldn't hold my breath on them doing anything to this, the way it is used in matches (and even pubs if enough guys from 1 clan are in there) is a result of good thinking. Punishing people for out-thinking you is stupid.

This smells just like one of those "I've been pwnt by ________, therefore it is overpowered and needs to be nerfed." threads...

The deal is, this is a great disadvantage to those using the VoIP system.
And since when does a full-fledged clan play a game like BF2 or CS:S and use the in-game VoIP???????? <--that is the core of your problem. Cough up $10 a month and get a TS or Ventrillo server ffs...

Learn to use it as well, and you too can have fun swapping squads in matches.

                    waaah waah waah waah waah...

There's nothing wrong with it.. both teams can do it. It probably makes matches more exciting since it gives you the feel of more people playing.

And at the same time, you have a squad full of suicidal idiots running at you not caring if they die, because their well hidden squad leader is a spawn point to them and they know they can just come back there instead of the last flag. The value of teamwork on the assault on a flag is lessened because people know they can spawn back at the flag they don't own yet if they die.

My proposed fix to squad hopping:

Just put a timer on it like you can't apply to a commander position for an amount of time if you lose the bid, you can't start a vote for a period of time after you start one, why not say you can't join any squads for 60 seconds after you leave another squad. 1 minute isn't terribly long, but longer than the spawn time so they're forced back to the last flag or take that 60 second hit to switch squad leaders.

I think that something along those lines would be acceptable. Does it somehow involve sharks with frikkin' laser beams attached to their heads ? :drevil:

Yeah, you want real guides, check out GameFAQs.

Speaking of which, I should add this legit strategy to the guide.

IMHO clan matches should evolve around using real military tactics. I know that BF2 is arcade but using the squad system THIS way is just TOO much arcade for me.

As already stated above, this is not the case.
I use squadhopping to it's full extent with my clan, because every enemy does it too.
                              It's not rocket science.
It's not about using your brain.
Once you got it, it's a cheap but powerful tactic that you MUST use if you don't want to lose.

LOL I have Teamspeak and I use it. Nevertheless, the fact that you cannot use squadhopping and VoIP at the same time shows clearly that the developers did not want you to use the squad system THIS way.
