    Light Machineguns.

PKM being outsniped by an AK in 5.45?* Something's wrong here.

*For those of you who don't speak Gun, that's the AK101 or the AK-SU.

Just a hypothetical question. Anybody like to play support, but think the machineguns are just... not good enough? Not being able to hit anything, no range, prone only...?

Does anybody else think it'd be more fun if the support class gave up their ammo packs for better LMGs? I miss how it was in Desert Combat, where machinegunners could actually lay down a base of fire and keep people's heads down.

Bipod code would be simply wonderful if it was executed well. Even better, being able to deploy your gun as a turret like the ones you see around the map (which are generally positioned to be useless).

How cool would that be? Prepared to recieve a charge, you open up on a squad of guys, shred two, and take a bullet to the neck. Your buddy looks up and grabs the machinegun while a medic attempts to patch you up.

Who'd give the ammo then? If we gave ammo to the support class and good killer LMGs, I think it'd be as unbalanced as spec-ops (ba-dum, chish!), so who do we give the ammo to? Engineer could take it. People would actually play them in infantry maps, then. There are flaws in the plan, yes, but I don't want to sort them all out here and now.

I know the patch is coming, and hopefully that'll fix all my worries, but to be honest, I doubt it. It'll probably make them slightly more accurate, but nothing like a LMG should act like.

Yes, and they're revising LMG accuracy in the next path. It's only half of the problem though - the other issue is the LMG projectiles moving half as fast as the other bullets.

      Iiiinteresting...

So 5.56 from an M249 will travel slower than 5.56 from an M16?

        That drives me crazy.

I agree with you. Lets just hope the patch brings a decent amount of accuracy to the LMG's.

            Re: Light Machineguns.

BF2 wiki claims the ballistics for the m249 and the Type 95 are identical, but the clip size, reload and draw time are different.

Might be wrong. The type 95 definately seems more accurate, but I haven't used it in months. (I hate chinese maps, and the PK seems better for the open spaces anyway)

Edit: What the hell? I respond to the latest post and my post appears above it?

I agree with you - so far the LMGs have been useful for nothing more than Spray Spray Spray, most notably the M249 for this.

but the Chinese LMG (forgot the name) is quite accurate. I suggest you try that out.

Also, apparently, the MG36 (the LMG in Spec Forces for the SAS is also extremely accurate, if its true to life it will be incredibly accurate, with Burst and Auto fire, 100 round clip and a slow heat up time. If you have SF or know a friend with it, get him to go on on your account and unlock the MG36 for you.

Thats because the ak101 is the best gun in the game

Yes. I know that at least part of the rationale is making it possible for you to see the tracer round effect, though there might also be balance reasons - though I can't imagine what they'd be.

The easiest way to see this is to shoot a soldier running perpendicular to your position. See how far you have to lead with the LMG, fire one shot, then lead with the M16 and shoot once.

                    Re: Light Machineguns.

I posted this in another thread:

A modern light machine gun should have rifle like accuracy on single shots and better than assault rifle groupings on small bursts. All machine guns are rifles at heart, having longer barrels and more weight should make them deadly accurate for single and burst shots. MG's only become inaccurate when fired continuously, like when used in a suppression situation. And again, this is counteracted somewhat by deploying the mg using a bipod.

In real life, a squad of exposed troops running in front of a deployed mg are dead meat, chewed up by (relatively) accurate and continuous fire. In BF2, you're lucky to knock out two troops before the rest of the squad rape you, even with the PKM.

I very much agree with Nihilist's facts about the LMGs. I know the PRMM mod makes them very nice and accurate over distances.

Hopefully the next patch will help the LMGs or someone can mod the Call of Duty: United Offensive style of MG in which the bipod can be deployed and stabalize the thing.

                        Re: Light Machineguns.

It's worth noting that LMGs are also bulky as all hell and difficult to pull up form the hip for quickshots. They are also litterally painful to use in a standing position (murder on the arms).

I like the idea of ramping up the accuracy a bit (we'll see how the patch goes), but there really should be major drawbacks when firing in anything other than prone stances. It should take awhile to stabalize the thing even then (the represent setting up the bi-pod).

BTW, I just came from a game where I managed to outsnipe two snipers while using the PKM. They saw me, but I wasted 'em first. I'm a little scared of what improved acc on it is gonna do!

                          Re: Light Machineguns.

the problem with most of these military/tactical games is they don't introduce gun weight into the equation, for instance the difference between sweeping a SAW and a G36C should be like the difference between turning a tank turret (SAW) and turning the mobile AA turret (G36C) because the G36C is lighter it becomes easier to move the weapon around this the reason that SWAT teams use submachine guns and carbines in CQB not PKMs lol, yet the downside should be that the G36C is LESS accurate than a rifle or LMG at range since the barrel on the C is short, they've got this completely reversed in BF2 and alot of other games as well and it's sort of ridiculous if you really think about it, lighter shorter barreled weapons firing more accurate than G3s and M16s yeah right.

Also the LMGs should have a limited field of fire once you deploy the bipod just like in Day of Defeat. But with those limitations the weapon should be just as accurate as any rifle when bipod is deployed.

...that's just my little fantasy world anyways, I do ****ing great with the LMGs obviously, I just got back from a server and I was owning everybodys ass without hardly even trying. There's nothing wrong with the LMGs and now that they're gonna up the accuracy it's gonna be boring if more people start using the kit cuz DICE decided to make it more noob friendly, I'll just be even more deadly though.

I don't think the accuracy needs improving whatsoever but I wonder if gun weight and fixed field of fire would balance things out so that you don't have someone like me running around in the Warlord palace beating people in CQB lol.
