i believe if you get a direct hit to the cockpit, it will kill the pilot and/or gunner but not destroy the chopper. I've done this a few times with AT missiles, APC guns, and the tank cannon

I have taken down a few choppers with the tank .. one shot one kill

I was even lucky enough to take a jet out when he was heading straight at me for a bombing run ... funny thing about that is that it was the ONLY JET KILL I HAVE EVER HAD!!! ... hahaha .. the AA is so damn lame I get my kill with a tank .. go figure :laugh:

If you does seem like you take down a helo with one shot I think it already had damage and your are finishing it off. It may not be smoking but my guess it was already damaged.

Yes you can switch to heavy machine gun to try to finish it off but if the helo is coming in at full speed rockets steaming ...good luck!

And yes I know BF2 does not go for reality and im not basing my post on that. I jsut think its a good balance move for the game.

In Desert Combat the tanks were used to snipe choppers and it was kinda lame, if anything I think the .30 cals should be used instead of the tanks main gun. A MBT just isn't suppose to be an AA vehicle, they have those already in game. DICE strives for a rock/paper/scissors approach to combat and making the tank's main gun shoot down choppers in one shot would disrupt that balance.

I think it's funny that people are complaining that a single shot from a tank doesn't take a helo down.....come on...you should be glad that you can shoot a helo in a tank at all. I mean sure, realistically if a helo got hit by a tank it would be no more, but also realistically, tanks don't shoot helos down. I think a real issue is how on earth does 2 direct hits from a stinger not obliterate an attack helo (happened to me on S.P. yesterday).

Realisticly a helicopter doing what the "pilots" in bf2 make them do would cause them to be very much shot down by tanks, Tows, MG's and anything that is designed to kill.

I've one shotted a fair amount of helos with Tanks and TOW's... A couple days ago some low flying, slow flying nub the on Sharqi was tooling around in the MI28 and me and my gunner managed to take him down 3 times over the course of the round....2 of those kills though were near the hotel, with him coming over the water from his base, and on both shots I nailed him - with no kill. The gunner finished him both times.

It is odd that a tank round can't take one out in one-shot. And this isn't as much about the damage dealt by the tank, or even the armor on the helo. If the crew of the helo isn't going to TV your ass and fly low enough to be hit, then they deserve to die in 1 round :) :)

Maybe this might change after the 1.2 patch comes out. They seem to be messing with the hitpoints of helicopters.
