They probably assume that folks who regularly play together employ other means of finding each other, such as sharing server info on voice chat or using XFire.

Frankly, the server browser can't accurately display pings, use filters, or consistently display reserved slots. If you think that it's going to be able to correctly track down one player by PID, you're a silly goose.

But what about an indicator in-game? If they can't code a simple list saying "if player name is <insert name here>, then either add an icon beside their name or make their name a different color", then I have lost any faith that I might have had remaining in the coders at EA and DICE.

60% of the special forces expansion pack was suppost to be a realese feature, EA doesn't care it isn't going to make them anymore money putting it in, you have already brought the game, they couldn't give to ****s.

I'll probably sound silly when I say this but I find BF2s gameplay very lonesome unless you find a decent squad, which can be tough sometimes.
I think this post really gets to the heart of the matter. BF2 has all these awesome teamplay features that allow casual, pub players to work together, but they don't give us a way to easily get back together with players who we've had good squad experiences with. I imagined, before release, that bf2 would inspire a lot of teamwork by players who weren't in official clans, but instead its only halfway there. Rarely, you'll find a group of players who are working together, and you have a lot of fun. Its obvious that cohesive squad play is really how the devs intended this game to be played.

The problem comes when the match ends, and the players start leaving the game. Maybe they don't all have xfire, maybe they just don't want to put in the effort to write down the whole squad's screennames and put them back into a 3rd party program. But unless you make an effort, you'll probably never see them again. If BF2 had an easy, simple way to compile a list of friends and contact them, see where they are playing, etc, i think there would be a lot more teamwork going on.
