    Feature still MIA: Buddy list!

Still no word on buddy an in-game buddy list in the release info on the upcoming patch.

    What gives?

Wasn't that supposed to be a release feature?

Sure, there's 3rd party trackers, both app and web based, but these come with their own problems.

Xfire et all aren't offically supported, so they always lag behind patch releases. They also take up RAM and system resources, impacting preformance.

With Web based trackers you can't copy and paste IPs. This mean you have to spend time flipping back and forther between the game and the web page or write down the IP if you don't have a great memory for numbers.

    SO...

Where's our flippin in-game buddy list???

      I forgot to mention...
BF2 is the ONLY major multi-player based FPS that I've seen in a long time (like 6 years long!) that doesn't have a buddy list!

It's a BASIC feature! How could it have been back burnered for so long? Don't people know that playing with buddies is one of the main reasons for on-line play??

I think there may be some good rocks being smoked somewhere in their project's foodchain.

They'll probably try to sell some extra cd loaded with features, 1 being a friend-list.

Hear, hear, Wargimp. This goes along with all the other planned but cut features that are probably looked at as "fluff" by a pressed dev team but which, in the end, are what make a good game great. I'm talking about more game modes, co-op play, a good server browser (though thats really closer to a necessity, if you ask me, or simply inexcusable), all those clan features, and the sort. Ranks are cool, but it really should have been the centerpeice of a larger front-end to the game that would provide integrated and relavent tools to the player to make the game play just that much better. Sure, priority-wise, all this stuff is low, i won't argue there, but these are casualties of a rushed game, not of thoughtfully restricted planning. It's obvious that DICE had greater ambitions for this game, and really wanted to push it that little bit farther with these sorts of features, but they hit the deadline EA handed them, and had to cut something.

What can we say. You pretty much covered it.

What annoys me even more is that I don't have much need for a buddy list (gee that sounds bad) since all of my mates don't want to buy BF2 and/or upgrade their computers. They all seem happy playing CS and can't be stuffed forking out the $80(Aus). I even seriously considered buying someone a copy but if I bought it for one of them I would feel I had to buy it for all of them and that isn't happening. :hmm:

Back burned for a long time indeed. Back burned for so long, it's one of those nice things that still has fragments in the code, acting as one of the many bandaids to keep the fragmented engine from falling apart around itself.

                  Code:
                  GeneralSettings.setBuddytagColor 0 0 0
This can be found in your profile foldier, general.con file. An interesting little line of code isn't it, I wonder what it was originally intended for, hmm?

I do agree, a buddy list is yet another thing we were promised and screwed out of. Definately wish they would work on stuff like that instead of whiner appeasements.

this is one of my big gripes with the game, no buddy list. did think it might be included in special forces, but it wasn't. its one of the basics for on-lines games these days.

This wouldn't be so much of an issue if ASE's BF2 buddy list wasn't broken.

But BF2tracker.com does have a feature where you click on the name of the server your buddy is on and it WILL launch BF2 directly into that server. It uses a special bf2:// protocol.

I also believe BF2s.com's 'My Leaderboard' allows you to do the same thing.

I agree Buddy List does need to be intergrated, its great shame I meet some cool people on BF2 (and not to mention the B$£%£") but it would be great if we could actually contact one another ingame using ingame features and play together more then once.

I'll probably sound silly when I say this but I find BF2s gameplay very lonesome unless you find a decent squad, which can be tough sometimes.

For some reason BF2Tracker doesn't see me as a valid player. Same with a couple of my buddies.

Don't know what's up with that.

Still, I had thought that a built in buddy list would have been a priority feature. I expected to see it in place by now.

The introduction of squads and not a buddylist is still absurd. Now that it's 100000x easier to make friends or play with your current ones, it's almost necessary. And how hard can it possibly be? It's an easy task with a great reward.

They're definitely smoking something and I want some.
