Re: So how is Battlefield 2 Special Forces?

I wish I would have spent my money elsewhere. Surge and Warlord are my particularily favorite maps, but having to go through the switch from VBF2 to SF to back to VBF2 doesn't justify the craving enough most of the time. I do enjoy the G36E and shredding people with the (despite how much people bash it!) MP7. Unfortunately the game stutters too much on my machine and the nightvision maps (which look stupid anyway IMO) are too sluggish to bother playing. Iron Gator sounds really fun but I wouldn't even try it on my system, and everyone else seems to loathe it. The new armies are a joke.

    PROS

-grappling hooks and ziplines are alot of fun. New angles to attack and more angles to defend! Plus it's just cool

-personally I love the trucks and civilian cars. Or, the 'technicals' if you get all in depth with it. Much needed. Ever see 'Navy Seals'? Go watch the chase scene with the old 80s box car and then tell me these don't belong in the game!

-more on vehicles, I'm not so sure about the quads and jetskis, but I'll throw that in on pros because they don't add any sort of imbalance I just think they get repetetive and look silly

    -Flashbangs! Teargas!

-new armies are refreshing even if the voices and weapon loadouts are lame

-new awards to get. This may not apply to everyone but 5hrs on any army will score you a pretty looking little ribbon, and it's fun to unlock the veteran/expert badges if you've already got a lot of experience with a class on VBF2

    -The Brits, man. BRITS

    CONS

-the insurgents and rebels don't get a new language or voice (may be wrong about this, if I am, the voice was dull enough to not notice)

-if you like playing as the 'bad guy' side like me then you're in for MAJOR (read: MAJOR) disappointment in the fact that the weapons are all the same as the original MEC. Brits get some neat toys to play with but they're just the second unlocks because EA is lazy and on these maps you can't use the 2nd unlocks if you're not a Brit. Spetz is a very refreshing concept (I'm half Russky myself :)) but their weapons are the same lame MEC loadout. US Navy Seals get some neat stuff like the SCAR-H..

-bad performance on good machines, good performance on bad machines.. It's like playing Russian roulette at this point.

-game just generally feels halfass. Apache and Hind-D were needed but just don't give me a boner, and that new tank/APC thing is just stupid.

Okay, so all in all, you're probably better off borrowing the game from a friend and popping it in just to get the unlocks and then giving it back. For the majority, you will only really appreciate a couple maps out of the rotary and it's up to you whether or not that's worth your money..

      IMO:

-Balance improved greatly (no more jets, lots cover from helis, artillery, and tanks, and most flags can only be capped by infantry)

      -Cool looking indoor areas

-Cool new gadgets (flashbangs are very useful even though they don't directly kill)

-New vehicles somewhat disapointing, but the one-person vehicles are nice since now no one can say "OMG that n00b didn't pick me up!".

-Elevators and openable gates are an interesting new addition that add some fun

-New outdoor enviroments are a BIT dissapointing (no Russian cities and the Russian areas are just gray and dull for the most part, I was hoping for some snow and ice)

      -Great fire fights

I guess I was a bit harsh on it, maybe I'm bitter that most of the maps run like syrup for me.

The working elevators and gates and stuff are UBER cool. It feels like something out of a movie.

          Still not worth your $$$!

If it wasn't for the Unlocks that we can use in regular BF2 it would have been a TOTAL waste of money IMO. Maps? No offence, but I don't agree with that statement. IMO, the Maps should have been geared around an Objective Style of game play(like others have mentioned) ie - Protect/Kill Hostages; Protect/Destroy Ho Chi Min Trail or something. Special Forces don't act in the way the game developer designed(in Real Life), so for me it's a 3 out of 10 at best. Yes I know SF not real life, it's agame, but still

I bought it mainly for the weapons. After i got my MG36, i felt it was well worth it.

Re: So how is Battlefield 2 Special Forces?

I LIKE IT; I LIKE IT ALOT. The problems with vBF2 is that

                  1) The maps are situated where you must drive all over the map to get to the fight/flags (Fushe, Dragon Valley, Daging)

                  or

                  2) You capture a flag in time to see 3 tanks and 2 APC's roll up. (Karkand, Daging)

Those have been my experiences almost EVERY time. I can tolerate Maashture City, and I can almost tolerate Sharqi. Otherwise, vBF2 has always been about waiting for the tank to kill you or the jeep to spawn so that you can capture the flag on the other side of the electronic world--for me, anyway.

SF isn't perfect. The loading times bite. They bite bad. The "unlocks" (that you pay $30 for) you don't get access to, unless you're on the right team.

Night vision is ok; gives me a headache sometimes and wearing them turns my ati x800xt AIW and 21" crt into a state of the art CGA monitor with 286-driven graphics. But you can (and should) turn it off for many places in those rounds. It was a bad (but tolerable) gimmick.

                  Scaling walls=good.

                  Zipline=good.

C4'ing a quad and riding it into (destroying) the enemy APC/Armor when just as your buddy get's to the enemy Armor/APC spawnpoint, and then spawning in the vehicle beside him/her--TRULY MAGICAL.

The fighting is more individual-based, less focused on armor, you can get around the maps faster, and you can complete objectives. I've noticed fewer people will play medic on the SF, giving you greater access to those points if you choose to be a first aid mule.

And the combined armored battalion rush? Noticeably (and thankfully) mostly absent. Ditto all the aircraft--I like flying, not too great at it--but it's nice having the bombs absent.

Helicopters still rule the sky, but we know how to deal with those, don't we my precious? Gollum, gollum...

I'd buy it. In a heatbeat. It's a totally different style of play, and I rarely (except when I want to get my jet fix) go back to vBF2.

Woah, woah, woah! If a Hind doesn't give you a boner, you might wanna talk to a doctor about getting some perscriptions.

By the way, HINDs can carry troops in SF, right? If not, then I can see why it wouldn't.

Great game when it runs properly. Unfortunately that is less than 25% of the time for me. Between crashing, bad lag, connection dropouts and failure to load I have some great games.

I've pretty much decided to give it a rest until it gets fixed up a bit. I still reccommend that people buy it simply because it is a great game when it's running properly, plus you get some good weapon unlocks in vanilla.

EDIT: The Hind can't carry troops.

Oh yeah, and Russian rebels and spetz do have different voices. I consider this a con though because it allows you to tell if your enemy is around the corner even though you speak the same language (unless the rebels have a certain accent). You won't notice this until you play for a while though.

The squad leaders for both Russian factions crack me up though. The rebels squad leader sounds really bored and uninterested while the spetz squad leader is ultra-enthusiastic and needs to scream everything at the top of his longues ("VATAKO!").

And why are the Russians incapable of saying anything but "plaseba" and "agleechna" when thanking someone?
