Lately I've been seeing a great deal of threads and posts ragging on snipers, plane whores, helicopter whores, armor whores, n00b-tubers, idiotic commanders, lazy or selfish squad leaders, etc. What makes me rather sad is the fact that some of these rants actually have merit; which is really too bad.
So, I'd like to say something a little different to you aforementioned snipers, whores, etc: thank you.
Snipers - one time I was out of ammo, and, of course, I started yelling for a support. Somewhat oblivious to my surroundings, I didn't notice an opponent sneaking up to knife me. The only thing I heard was his death cry. I certainly hadn't shot him, and I didn't see anyone else around who could have. The text read, <sniper> [M21] <opponent>.
Shortly thereafter, I thought I saw a support coming towards me, so I stood up and yelled for ammo again. And then I saw the red text. But it was only for a split second. <sniper> [M21] <opponent>. That sniper, I've forgotten his name, protected me until I was resupplied and ran off.
I don't believe this to be an isolated incident. I think there are people being saved by these unseen guardians all the time; they just don't realize it. To all the snipers out there who genuinely care about their teammates more than their stats, I say, with a heart full of gratitude, thank you.
Planes - I think this was on the Gulf of Oman, USMC. I was a member of a squad moving through one of the urban areas. An enemy tank ambushes us from around a corner and half the squad is dead, including the squad leader and the only anti-tank. Well, I don't know about my remaining squadmates, but I thought I was done for. I call for air support, reinforcements, anything in the hopes that I could save myself from yet another death.
Roughly five seconds later, there was a flash and the tank was gone. The text attributed the kill to a jet. Of course, I thank him and start moving on. I get a little further down the road when I hear the jet coming back towards me at a low altitude. Then I see him release his bombs right over me. WTH?! The bombs missed me by a narrow margin...and killed the MEC infantry no more than twelve feet behind me.
After that, I saw the guy make several more passes over me, but no other incident occured. On his final pass he waved his wings at me and departed when I reached a friendly spawn point. To all those guardian angels in the sky who look after their grunts, I say thank you.
Helicopters - Somewhat similar to the above experience, but cool none the less. Map was the one with the nuclear reactor towers (Dalin, I think). Anyway, came in as Chinese and backpacked it (also called "hoofing" it) to the mouth of the road that leads to the main base. And it was a blood bath.
A group of USMC assaults, supports, and a medic were cutting down everything in sight. On occasion, some brave soul would try to get 'em in one of our tanks; but to no avail due to a prowling Cobra overhead. I start sneaking my way towards the location of the fireteam and happen to see the Cobra come to a stand still. Well, there's a .50 cal machine gun next to me and it isn't in view of that fireteam, so...he went down in a ball of fire. It was far more luck on my part, than lack of skill on his. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Anyway, I start moving back towards the fireteam; but I hear a helicopter over me. I look up and it's one of ours. It's always cool to see aircraft from an infantry's perspective, but I didn't think much about it. Well, that was until he completely devestated the fireteam. My objective completed, I started running to the next enemy spawn point; but I still hear the helicopter overhead. I stop and look up, and there he is. Just hovering over me. He did this for the rest of that round, wherever I'd go, he'd go. I think that game was the best k:d ratio I had ever gotten in a single round; and all thanks to that chopper pilot.
As it turns out, the Cobra I had shot earlier was lining up a TV missile shot at him (the helicopter); and by destroying the Cobra I had unknowingly saved his life. So, to all those helicopter pilots who play watchdog for us on the ground, I say thank you.
Tanks - Karkand, USMC. Go figure. As usual I move up to the first enemy flag and start taking it with a few other guys. Eventually a tank rolls up and we capture the flag. And with that flag capture came the usual MEC counterattack. We fought them off and we (the soldiers and I) started moving off towards the next flag. The tank pulled in front of us, and we could occasionally see him fire his main gun at enemies down the street from us.
But he didn't just race to the flag and attempt to capture it on his own. He'd move up a little, and then he would wait for us on foot to catch up. When a Vodnik of infantry unloaded in front of us, we scurried behind the tank and he took 'em out. Of course, everyone knows that tanks are the weakest in the rear. And one of the guys next to me spotted an anti-tank getting ready to blow our M1A2 shield. Of course, we didn't like this idea, so we shot him.
That tank stayed with us forever. He would never get too far ahead that we would be dangerously exposed to enemy fire, and he always made the attempt to put himself between us and any enemy we encountered. To all those tankers out there who shepherd the men in the line of fire, I say thank you.
Commanders - One of the things that I love to do is fly the transport helicopter. Just shuttling squads from one flag to another is great fun for me, don't know why. Maybe that's why my scores are so low...anyway. This was once again on Dalin.
There were planes flying everywhere, and helicopters trolling our (Chinese) main base for people spawning. I'd try to lift off with a squad, only to be immediately cut down by the choppers or the planes. I don't know what changed, but after several attempts we were able to lift off. And we made it to the first flag. And the Red "X" of Doom never even lit up. The squad with me thought we were just lucky, and I thought I was just good.
Every now and then our plane would fly in front of my winshield where I could see him. He wasn't dangerously close, he was just flying around. But I would see him on increasingly regular intervoles. Pulling up my map, I discovered that he was flying circles around us. I found out later that the commander saw what we were trying to do, and started organizing a plan for us to do so.
Further more, our attack helicopter was flying ahead of us to whatever flag we went to. He'd get a couple of kills every now and then, but mainly he'd just make the area safe for the squad in my helicopter. To all those COs, who's behind-the-scenes work is rarely seen or appreciated, I say thank you.
If you think I just made these stories up...then you're right. But all of these stories are examples of what happens when the snipers, the plane whores, the helicopter whores, the tank whores, and the idiotic commanders genuinely think about other players.
The entire point of this thread is to give a pat on the back and a kind word to those who really care about us.
To those of you who give a darn about something more than your stats, to those of you who give more than a rat's behind about your teammates, I say thank you.
Thank you.
