Have you guys tried updating punkbuster manually:

And changing the PB access interval:

-join PB enabled online game
-access console (~)
-type 'pb_sleep 500', hit enter
-type 'pb_writecfg', hit enter
-voila

Update: For anyone having this problem, I followed the above suggestion and it fixed my connection errors.

Is it just me, or is BF2 just about the worst for these types of problems? I have high speed cable and It happens. 8000 down and 768 up....shouldnt happen, but it does. I remember in Ghost Recon that other peoples bad conex were always a problem.

I have SBC Yahoo DSL and I constanly get this. It has to be the most annyoing thing in BF2 todate

HOW I FIXED THIS "PROBLEM W/CONNECTION & DISCONNECTS"

First off....my setup:
Comcast
Router w/all necessary BF2 ports open (linksys-doesn't really matter what brand)

The day before the "problem" started happening, all was good...Server list was updating normally and was joining and playing without any abnormal connection problems. (Normal to me is a little lag when I join a server, then it smooths out in less than a minute...but no "there's a problem w/connection")

When I jumped on to play the next day...same problems as described in the above posts...coincidently I had just turned off my "file sharing program" (edonkey) when the problem started happening.

So on to the cause of the problem....
PING was way too high. "File sharing programs", even when you have them shut down, other users of your "file sharing program" still think you're connected to the "sharing network". Gradually the pings will settle down, not sure how long, but they do ....so they are pinging the ports of my "file sharing program", causing a high ping on my connection.

The solution...
I went into my router, where I forward ports (open them up), and disabled the "file sharing program" ports (closed them)....saved the settings...connected to BF2....servers updated normally....joined a server...was connected for 4-5 hours without any "problems or lag"...Fixed.

Side note: the way my router is setup...to refuse echo (ping) requests to any port that's not opened...solved my problem, hope it solves yours....good luck.

Talus's fix kind of worked. My connection problems still appears but now it only happens everyonce and a while
