How many play with lighting on low?

Playing with lighting on anything but low would give you a disadvantage since it would be harder to see the enemy in certain situations.

I agree. But most people would rather have the nice graphics over a small advantage.

      I just want smooth-under-all-circumstances performance.

I agree with Mr. Gooch. I would rather enjoy the realism and detail in the graphics than use the lack of shadows to an advantage.

I used to play with it on low for the longest time but after the 1.03 patch bumped it up to medium. I still kill/die the same as I did before. It really isn't much of an advantage, if any, at leasts not to me. Sometimes it's even better on medium, because the soldiers stand out against the darkness, especially the USMCs.

On low it looks like BF1942/DC, not a modern game.

all my settings are low and off, except "effects" is set to high for flying jets.

medium light will just down you fps by one frame or so... i dont know why i should put it on low.... only do to reajust my graphics to normal when all graphics get down to a minimum without my intervention . anyone else got this bug? i know vice versa is possible too.

what advantage does the high effects have on flying jets?

if u set effects to low, u wont see the trail behind other jets and missiles, u see less smoke when other jets are having low health. u dont see much explosion effect when u blow up a stinger or a vechile, etc.

*EDIT* im not sure about the trails of cannon bullets, but i dont think u can see them with low effects either.

x0pht is correct... contrails and smoke are much easier to see when effects are on high. Personally I have Effects\Geometry on high , shadows off , the rest at medium settings. Runs pretty decent on a 2.16Ghz AXP 1Gb ram and an old 9700 pro.

does geometry being high help flying jets? i've never set it to high before.

more than everyting!!!!!!!!... effects come in 2nd postition i advantage matter compared to geometry.
when geometry is on low, when approaching an ennemy tank for example, you will see it 100meter before being in range...
on high though, you will see it about 400meter before you blow it up.
same for boat, heavy jeep, apc, jets, chopper, TOW, stinger. for small jeeps its very low.

isnt it related to view distance?

I thought geometry was just LOD (level of detail) scaling, so you still see the tank you don't see it as detailed as you would with high settings compared to low.

Ah, yes contrails are pretty important when dogfighting, thanks for clearing that up for me.

I've got a 9700, damn fine cards. Though I would suggest keeping shadows on low, they can easily give away an enemy hiding above you or a guy around the corner.
