Uh. You still need 2gb of ram ROFL

nVidia's 7800 GTX 512 edition is more than just ram: its a core and memory bandwidth increase as well. If the game doesnt use it, the texture load will be far better at least. On BF2 from I heard, there are benefits...if you're willing to fork the money =)

      Wait til BF3, then we'll see =P

It just seems to me that the average parent might have taught their children to keep their ignorant mouths shut, when the subject of conversation turns to something they have no clue about. Mine did! I enjoyed the company of adults from a very early age, but I never opened my mouth in a social situation unless I knew what I was talking about first hand.

512 also has higher speeds so thatll increase your performance.
512 cards have often been released with slower ram. Especially budget cards. The ones that have decent memory haven't shown any significant speed increase yet. BF2 might have changed that but so far I haven't seen any tests of that specific issue. Maybe a user of this forum have tested it.

Actually, the 7800GTX 512 has higher-speed RAM than the 256 counterpart.

Anandtech.com did benching on the 512 and some other cards on the market and confirmed the 512 is quite a bit better than the 256.

Games don't have to be "designed" to use more video memory. They just load as many textures as possible into the vid card's memory, and then start to use the amount of system RAM allocated in the BIOS's AGP Aperture. After that, textures will be loaded into the swap.

***Try not to post within a technical discussion if you're completely clueless on the issue!
No, they are not desigined to use them as the pipelining on the PCI-E port isn't enough to get the optimum performance out of the card, therefore they are not designed to use them.

I read a review of the 512 cards running the new DOD, which was 'designed' with 512 cards in mind, only got another 9FPS on average. Not worth another $200 to me...
Not to say you can't get more but it isn't all ubber like everyone thinks.

Re: Battlefield 2 With 512 MB Video Card

For the 7800GTX, not only does it have 256MB more RAM, it has 24 pipelines as opposed to 20 on the 7800GT. That's where the major difference shows up. Tests have shown that 512MB doesn't give much more performance, but more pipelines do.

First you stated that games weren't designed to use 512Mb video cards, and now, that motherboards aren't designed to use them to their full potential. Both points are irrelevant, in that gaming performance will increase over a 256Mb card, which answers the question posed by the owner of the thread. You will load more textures from the game into the RAM on the larger card, which will increase performance, as the RAM on vid cards is obviously far faster than system RAM, or the swap file. That's all there is to it. It's really not an arguable point.

                          You are truly a retard.

Most of the last AGP released didnt even hit the ceiling that AGP could handle. PCI-Express's ceiling for performance is way way beyond what any video card for 3d gaming that has been released. PCIE just came out quickly so people would start moving platforms so the transition is easier. (i.e.- sell more cards in the future, easier)

Also, 32 bit applications can utilized upto 4 gigs of ram, and BF2 would be no exception. If you had 4 gigs of ram on your video card and over 3 gigs worth of textures, they would load nicely. They wouldnt just STOP at 256 because then half the screen wouldnt be there.
