    arty and realism

    Hi all

One of the main gripes in the game is the use of artillary. Its too powerful and easy to use.

Here is an idea. Why not make arty a bit more squad orientated. The idea is that instead of the commander havig an all seeing eye, he would rely on his squads giveing him coordinates to attack.
This would mean that the commander and squad leader wiould need a map with a grid superimposed.
Squads needs arty they get in touch with commander and give him the coordinates of the grid. No squad request = no arty.
This might also help team work as without team no arty.

    What do you guys think?

    arty and realism

    hi all.

seems many people have gripes about the ease of use of arty. Here is one idea. Why not use squads to control arty.

    here is the general idea.

Squad needs to assualt a certain area. They get in touch with commander and pass on the grid refence to be shelled. Commander selects the refence and boom. This way the squads get the arty when they want it and where. If no squad request then no arty.
The maps would need a grid superimposed for refence points. It would add a bit more realism and squad play as no team means no arty.

    What do u think

Re: How to make artillary fun

You could make it a little easier. The Squad Leader can already request artillary in a certain area, just have that the only way artillary can be used. That would probably be an easy fix.

The bad part is that is kind of make the commander just a secretary doing the SLs bidding. The commander needs to be the one to lead.

I think it is fine the way it is. Commanders always have extra intel that the SL and grunts don't see.

I think then no one would be a commander....I know I tyr to as much as possible request arty, UAVs, and supplies....but sometiems you just forget about it....I think the commander doing his job the way it is is fine...

and to those that dont think it is realistic have they seen some live feeds from the predator drones and other UAVs....man you can make out what people are reading....

How does this add realism? Do you really think that an E-6 can direct fire? Squad leaders follow their Platoon Leader's orders, they don't direct fire.

very true. just seems that the commander is a bit too all seeing sometimes. Example- you go cap a flag it turns grey, you just know that arty is on its way. IMHO it might be better and more exciting if no enemy see you u save. But if you se a guy capping a flag then u can call down the arty.
get your point about commander being a sec.

I think you should stop making threads about the same subject in rapid secession.

                I'd prefer a more team-oriented approach.

                1) Nix automated artillery altogether
                2) Give Squad leaders a laser designator or a pair of spotting binoculars
                3) Give jets a bomb payload or laser-guided missile payload that can only be launched when an SL issues a request.

SL identifies a target or area that needs cleaning, jet hears request and a waypoint pops up on the map, when jet gets within range the payload is armed and he can launch/drop it at/on target.

Would also work with player-controlled artillery or mortars ala DC/BFV.

Big boom, teamwork, plenty of checks and balances.

                  I think you are right.....

But seriously I think that BF2 has finally incorporated the arty in a usefull way.... all the other BFs and mods the arty was almost pointless on most maps...I mean when people would work togather and be forward observers it worked somewhat...but mostly it just sucked.....

                      Yep, like it.

Its all about making these ramdom (or so it seems) bombing from arty and planes more focused. Afterall, how many of us have wanted to break a commanders legs cause he just put arty on your head cuase he saw some red dots near you.
This way arty is more help to the squad. Same for planes.

Here's an easy fix for you, get rid of that whole scan thing revealing every enemy on the map. Link the resuppy drops to what was the scan trailer and boom suddenly you can make effective flanking attacks plus the commander has to rely on his troops for more info...

I don;t know maybe they tested this and found it to not work, but still...

                              yeah i agree with you

squad leaders should be the only ones allowed to place artillery,

                              commanders should just accept it
