lol yeah i got the same

you can try any of the fixes you want, it is obvious these fixes are disputable....but that is no reason to take them down, they are certainly worth a shot for those who do want a go, if they don't work, it's very simple to change them back

It doesn't require a reg hack to do it, just set the page file size to 0.
It doesn't matter, you should never set it to 0, infact it should always be higher than the amount of RAM, so there's room to maneuver.

But don't take my word for it:
http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks5.htm and read the articles in links in the first 3 lines of the page.

You can look in other thread here on tbf2 where the exact same topic is discussed:http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showp...5&postcount=33

Disabling the pagefile will cause you to use more physical RAM, because how Windows uses Virtual Memory.
If there's no pagefile, then temporarily unneeded processes and resources can't be put to disk, and have to stay in RAM. This is because before, VM = PF + RAM, but now it will only be VM = RAM.

So what could be put out of RAM before now says in RAM and thus uses more RAM.

Again read the articles, especially this one: http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/virtualmemory.htm

Some registry tweaks DO work, it just depends on what you're trying to MAKE work. I just read through v3.0 of the TGTC (tweakguides.com) and besides moving my pagefile to my second drive (which showed only limited improvment in peformance by itself) the rest of my tweaks were registry oriented. Once I finished the guide, I was able to put my settings back to all high, 6xAA, 1280x1024. Before that, I was at mostly medium with about 3 high, 4xAA, same res, lower fps. Basically the point is different tweaks work for different people. I don't think most of the results are imagined. Unless everyone is taking acid before reading their FRAPs count =P

Yes some do work, of course, but many don't, and don't do what is adverticed and/or have no effect in XP. Many sites still advocate some of the 'bad' tweaks that don't work. My problem was only tweaks 8 and 9 at the site in question, which are examples of the 'bad' tweaks that just won't go away.

The better tweak guides/sites dont use the 'bad' tweaks and know what they are talking about and don't just copy-paste from other 'tweak sites'.

Often I think ppl just fall for the placbo effect, and they desperately want their system to be better and think it worked.
Most ppl that try tweaks, don't test to see if there really is an improvment.

Using FRAPS is okay if you use it to benchmark with, but just watching the counter isn't enough, like most ppl probably do.

Ppl should know what exactly the tweaks do or have a better understanding of what they do (like your example of reading tweakguides) and if they have any effect before they use them, this way they will also be able to see, that many tweak utils are also using tweaks that have no effect.

TGTC, which is a comprohensie and good guide, also had some of these tweaks but they have been removed now, e.g.

There are several registry settings that are presented as controlling various memory usage behaviors in
Windows. Over time these have proven to be useless. Specifically these are the
DisablePagingExecutive, IOPageLockLimit and AlwaysUnloadDLL entries. If you have already
applied these, donʹt worry as they are totally harmless, but they appear to be unnecessary and nonfunctional,
so I have removed them from this guide. If you still want to apply these tweaks because you feel
they have some impact on your system, you can use Cacheman (See below).

Re: My website about BF2 lag

To that effect you're absolutely correct. Even the guide I was reading, which I believe many of us use, stated in v3.0 that a lot of tweaks had been removed from the previous version because after the community tested them, they turned out to be fruitless. Either they did nothing, didn't work correctly, or actually did damage.

Some tweaks cause more headaches than help, like renaming bf2.exe. I've seen no peformance increase, some people have, and that's one place I'd be willing to be it's mostly psychological because it "just makes sense" according to the explaination that ATI/Nvidia register it as a special .exe blah blah blah. Still, since some people have experienced positive outcomes, the best way to approach it would be to make a copy of the bf2.exe file, and rename THAT. So you'll have both. I can pretty much promise you that you won't get 20fps from changing the executable's name, so keep a copy of the bf2.exe around for mods and xfire.

Pick and choose your hacks intelligently. Don't go messing around your services.msc file just because a guide tells you it's okay. It'd really suck to turn off your network because the guide was created for standalone computers, or shut off services that Catalyst require to overclock, if that's your thing. I did a hack that was supposed to speed up my wireless mouse's responce and basically destroyed my ability to game, and it was from a reputable guide.

CREATE RESTORE POINT. As long as you do that you can test about as much as you want. Just make sure that if you're lucky enough to have two or more drives, you keep your important data drive unplugged, and do restore points after every major tweak. I wouldn't do more than 3 or 4 registry tweaks before spending a day <no>tweaking</no><edit>TESTING</edit> it. Well... okay I would, and have/do, but I also only have my OS and games on my main drive and have no problems reformatting and reloading everything every week if I have to.

I wish I could say that we should just all give up because there is no elusive "fix", but that's not true. There's a lot of fixes for almost everyone. It's just that there's no fix-all-cure-all. And always spend a couple dozen hours messing around with your computer before you lay down more dough. I'd rather see you screw your computer up and have to do a dozen fresh Windows installs then buy a new videocard and still be peed off.

                Good luck

Yea I edited, because I remembered the tweaks that had been removed from the guide. I have a nasty habbit of adding to my posts after initially posting them. :wall:

It isn't long ago, that almost everyone used these tweaks, me included, the major guides have brought much attention to the 'problem', and are better at explaining not only what works, but what doesn't.

oh well, when it all boils down to it these are worth a shot,

just create a restore point like Jofaba suggested and you can't really do any wrong, i'd rather do this than shell out 300 bucks or so on new upgrades for my system when they aren't neeeded

i tried to explain the tweaks as best i could, and i think i put sufficient warnings to those about to attempt them, but still

anyways, im glad we'vew had this discussion and i shall do some more research on the disputed tweaks and seriously consider their validity and place on my site

thanks again for your input, both of you

                      peace,

Please don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to put your site or you down at all. I think a centralized place for tips is a fine idea. Discussion like this can only help you strengthen the validity of the site, and please don't forget to credit any sources (like tweakguides) that you pull information from. The site's definately come quite a ways since I first saw it. Good work and good luck
