The cone of this Gmax model is beaten up

That's the sparrow missile I am modelling, you might notice that the cone seems beaten up and I have no idea why. In gmax, the vertices, edges, and polygons seem to be in order with the correct x, y, and z axis.

Basically what I did to make this cone was create a cylinder, select all the vertices at one end of it, and collasped it to one vertices creating a sharp cone. I then added more vertices in the circumfrence of the cone to smoothen it.

Also, how do you find out how many polygons your model has?

    - delete your smoothing group, select all polies of shaft then smoothing group
    - shrink all vertices in one row then weld them rather than collapse
    - poly counter is in utilities tab...

What's my and what is smoothing group?

Here's the picture of the model in Gmax:

Bah, I need more help on making the cone of it.

I basically deleted the cone part and welded the vertices at the end of the shaft. At this point, everything goes well, but once I add in more vertices via "slice plane" feature into the cone, I get a distorted model when it's rendered.

I think I know what the problem is, it was not the model or gmax, but the rendering software I use. You see, since Gmax cannot render models, I had to export this model to .MD3 (Quake 3) format which a software known as "3D exploration" can render.

I think there's a problem between the export and rendering that kept distorting the model.

Maybe theres a different problem. What did you use to make all those segments to make the tip look nice and pointy?

I had a similar problem long time ago and cant remember what the command or method was that I used to make the tip. It ruined the polies although it looked fine in the wireframe view.

Re: The cone of this Gmax model is beaten up

I basically used the verticies end of the cyilinder, collasped them to create a verticies that was centered to the cylinder. I then used the "Slice Plane" feature to add in more verticies into this cone to create a smooth cone.

Now, instead of modifying the cylinder, I attempted to create a cone and attach it to the cylinder. However, the more segments I put into it (to create a more smooth model), the more distorted the cone looked in that render software.

first of all - u dont smooth out surfaces by adding more vertices/polies - use smoothing groups - select groups of polies and look about 3/4 down menu till u see a pad with 30+ buttons - tada!!!

second - after that initial weld i think you should have converted it back to editable poly ( collapse the stack whatever ) then it would look sweet.

Thanks, I learned about how to smooth objects by doing one of those Gmax tutorials.

hehehe dont smoothing groups kick a$$ :) now you will find tht you could make tht missile out of a 10-12 sided cylinder and it will look just as good and wont lag your game up as you may find with modelling for games and whatnot it is a constant struggle to keep polies as low as possible... smoothing groups make this a possibility. - i used to model like you untill i was pulled up for too many polies... one thing is for sure - lower poly models are a hell of a lot easier to unwrap! have fun m8

Eh, i'm having difficulty of carving out a shape that I want it to be. Am I allowed to add in vertices/edges solely for changing the shape of the cone to my desire, not for smooth/polish?

i dont now why you would have trouble - why not make a cone / adjust the vertices so its not a straight point angle / and then just extrude the backend out of it?

I did that and rendered it with a different software, the cone still has that "twisted" shape, i'll show you screenshots soon.

I'm also installing this renderer for Gmax hoping to see whether it's the render software i'm using is at fault.
