My 'puter is a 1.8Ghz Athlon cpu, 768Mb RAM, ATI x800 something-or-other vid card, which by most accounts is a mediocre gaming computer, and I run BF2 on mostly medium settings, with a few edging towards high (eg. I have view distance set to 100% ) and it runs smoothly.

I don't get blazing frames/second, but it runs around 30 at a minimum, which is perfectly adequate.

Based on that, I'd say your suggested system would run medium-to-high settings quite well. (I don't know about the power supply, I'm not that informed about computer hardware)

As to what difference those settings will make relative to having everything set to high, I can't help you. All I'll say is that I play the game to ... well ... play the game, not to look at the nice scenery. On medium-to-high settings the game looks darn good, and as long as it's running smoothly, it's all good. In my humble opinion, going out of your way to be able to slide a few video settings up a few more notches isn't really worth it, because if you're really "into" the game, rather than the scenery, you probably won't notice a few jagged edges on the building next to you, or a bit of fuzzy grass texture, as you roll by in a tank, or fall from the sky after getting C4'd. :)

I don't think you would get full performance out of the componets with a 300W PSU, though wait for a second opinion on it.

You guys must buy crap RAM or something.

I have 1gig Mushkin Enhanced and I never get stuttering really.

Ok, the only time i do is when i have AA all the way up, and lets say two jets, a chopper are all bombinh right in front of me, plus artillery. But i think nearly anyone would get stutter there.

1gig is fine. Just get good ram and keep your system maintained.

...............Now lets look at the scenario again except i am building a computer for BF2, it would be move advantagous for me to put that £50 on a better processor due to the amount hte processor is used in BF2 realitive to the GPU, it would give you more performance increase.

That's where you're mixed up, BF2 is more GPU intensive, than CPU intensive.

Thanks for recomending a AMD ect. but I alrdy have the P4. With my planned upgrades I will have:

P4 3ghz
1gig ram
x700 pro

I use a P4 Northwood 3GHz@3.2 GHz, X800XL@ 425/1100, 2Gb RAM
I just tried a few maps and it turns out I can play BF2 online 64 player map completely maxed out at the max resolution I can set in-game, I didnt check FPS but I did not see any obvious annoying slowdowns or stuttering.
Yes AMD's are great and my next system will be AMD but the P4's can play the game fine if mixed with good components.

My 3dmark score is 5206.

Advice, get another gig of RAM and buy a better GPU.

He is on a tight budjet and already has the 3ghz P4

As for videocard... for a tight budjet and good bf2 performance I would suggest the 6600GT

512ram... will only work for LOW
you need at least 1 gig of ram... thats it.

I personally run an athlonXP3000 with 1 gig ram and 6600gt...
Medium is where I stand...

High =
2x 6600GT or 1 card that costs a lot more
2gigs of ram
SATA Raid drives
and a good 939pin athlon64 on a GOOD motherboard that has a GOOD chipset

Battlefield 2's performance (particularly when online) is highly dependent on your graphics card and video settings, much more so than your CPU speed.
