Yes you do, if you just throttle forward from beginning the plane will just drive forward and crash.

Throttle backward isn't needed, just make the jet's nose points up while still on the runway (with the mouse), and then go forward with the afterburners on.

Yeah, I didn't realize until the post a few back that I had the Coop mod activated when I launched single player. So that jet must have been added by the mod.
