    my first model

hey guys i am very new to the modelling arena (it all became so clear about 4 days ago) and this is my first model... its a futuristic smg for a mod i am skinning for (which i learnt two weeks ago lol)... its done in gmax but i think i will move onto 3ds now.. now (without tooting my horn) i thought this was a good go for a first try considering what i have seen some of the bad mods push out... what do you guys? (think its hard for me to guage for myself cause i did it)

i may redo the handle... now i gotta unwrap this baby lol

edit: i rudely put this in somone's thread so i thought i'd better start my own...

Not bad at all for a first model, I'd say just work on the overall smoothness of it. The handle and clip area are very boxy.

Truly amazing for a beginner, very promising. I remember still playing around with that teapot thing in Max.

lol, wondered too. Probably just some example or something.

Nice modell, you need to learn how to use smoothing groups though, they let you save alot of polies if used right. I'm not sure if gmax supports smoothing groups.

In this tutorial they mention smoothing groups. Take a look.

yeah i got 3ds now and gmax does have them, in fact i used some - how does smoothing groups affect the amount of polies you have though
as far as i knew they were for smoothing the lighting... and tht tutorial seems to lean in the same direction... now im confused...

                        Re: my first model

                        Oke, for examle

heres a box chamfered twice and a cylinder with 18 sides WITHOUT smoothing groups:

Now here is a box chamfered once and a cylinder with 10 sides WITH smoothing groups

Note that they look nicer, especially ingame, than the above. When you make a vehicle, for example a tank, with all the little details, each using smoothing groups instead of multiple sides, itll save you alot of polys.

Oh, and btw: very nice second model. I dint see it before because your host was down (?)

Thank you Overcloud, I have been trying to find ways to do such method other than adding in more vertices...

yeah i was about to say - ummmm yeah look at the barrel, drum clip, stock pad.... but you didnt see the second one. yeah i havent updated the smg image yet... but you can see what i mean - i thought you meant smoothing groups lowered polies - rather than they make lower poly surfaces look better...

Ok guys, the teapot was one of the first 3d models ever made back in the 70-80 -90's whenever, it was used to show off how well a computer can mimic a real object in shape texture lighting and bumpmapping. Thats why the teapot is a important object for noobs.
