Been playing BF2 matches via ClanBase for a couple months now. And i've found that the majority of clans on there either :

A) Dont have an IRC chan
B) Have one but there's 1 person + L in there
or
C) Have one with loads of people who dont talk/ reply

Does the battlefield scene not use IRC? Its a hell of a lot easier to arrange (league/ ladder/ friendly) matches.

Personally i dont like having random people on my MSN, thats for RL friends/ family.

i suspect that you are new to irc. most people who have been using IRC for a long time know what that leaving your mirc idle is the status quo. plus there's a sort of elitist attitude amongst the "vet" irc users. they won't usually answer pm's or channel messages to strangers.

i used to use irc for many years just for chatting. your experience is not something that is specific to the "battlefield scene". join any chan on any server and you will find your fair share of idling people. i don't see why you can't just organize your MSN list and seperate RL friends from BF2 buddies etc. it's really not that hard and much easier to keep up with people in the long run since mirc doesn't have any conveniant notification features like most messengers.

I prefer to keep MSN for my RL friends/ family and would rather not have gaming related stuff on there.

You can have beeps and notifications and what not on IRC , the only thing that its lacking is a "pop-up" like MSN.

The TFC community uses nothing but IRC to talk to each other and communicate, its far easier than anything else .. dont have to add people to a contact list or owt.

If someone leaves me a pm and they're still online when i return, ill reply and id consider myself a "vet" user. But then, im a nice guy :p

in short ... IRC > MSN for clan related stuff

i'm not sure why you would not like to have "gaming related stuff" on your msn even though the program is perfectly capable of allowing you to organize your contacts but you need to seriously reconsider. MSN and most messenger programs are far easier to use than irc so obviously you're gonna have to communicate with a sizable chunk of your gaming buddies through some other medium. i've ran into the same problem before, you're better off being organized and worrying less about trivial things. mirc can be easier for getting several people together but every clan is going to have idiots that can't be bothered with using a prehistoric protocol.

Im sorry but you're completely wrong.

MSN is good for 1on1 conversations ... but when there's more than 3/4 people its just ****.

In my clans main chan, there are 23 people .. imagine that on MSN, unreadable, unuseable and just generally ... crap.

You dont have to add people to a contact list, just go into a chan and talk. No adding then waiting for them to accept/ come online to accept.

I communicate withe ALL my gaming buddies on IRC, ive got a few on MSN ... but then id consider those mates rather than just gaming buddies.

MSN just isnt clan friendly imo .. and ive been around since the days when clans (in europe at least) use to used ICQ to arrange stuff. Which was a joke, you'd spend like half an hour to an hour trying to get everyone into one conversation and being able to see each other. Then get everyone to shutup while they all did the CTRL+G ("[b]LOL :-)]/b]") and CTRL+B ("BEEP BEEP"") sound / text spam

I thought people stopped using MSN years ago? IRC is obviously the best option for clans, always has been. I think bitvomit is a bit of a noob tbh

not really, i've used IRC for about 6 years myself too, i'm just sick of it. the guy is asking why everyone idles on IRC and i keep telling him that messengers are the best way to get ahold of someone. so what if IRC is the best option for clans? apparently no one is using it for BF2 so it negates it's usefulness in carwashs situation and that's the facts as carwash said it.

Used to use IRC for games like EVE (sad I know) and it was an essential tool if you wanted to be in the know. Rarely use it now because I'm not in a clan but if I needed to quickly get in contact with a specific clan, then I'd use IRC rather than adding complete strangers to my MSN/XFire. TeamSpeak would be another option...

Noooo, im not asking why everyone is idle on IRC ... i know that. Im asking why MOST clans dont seem to even have an IRC chan ? When its the most superior way of communicating and arranging things between clans

i was like wtf? IRC and TS are totally two different things. that cracked me up. i told my former clanmates about that hilarious comments on vent, so everyone had a great break during scrims.

I come from a UT based game, and UT - from 99 up to 2k4 - has its own internal IRC client.

The question of the year: Why don't ALL games build in an IRC client?

We're not talking about a coding nightmare, imagine how much easier those CS:S and BF2 matches would be if you could idle in the opposing clans IRC pre-match. Imagine being able to "." a friend and see where he's playing, and join by clicking on the IP link?

Ugh...so simple, but would make life so much easier :)

the thing a lot of people don't realise about IRc is is that the chat aspect is the least interesting thing it does.

Of course theres xddc im sure everyone is familier with that but there are also many other handy/cool scripts. I use nwnk irc on windows and xchat on linux both of which are wicked clients with lots of cool stuff in them (nwnk is just mirc with lots of scripts).
