    Games to be time capped

Recently i have discorved via Gamedrom this report which says that we might be time capped in certain games like wow

    Report, via Gamedrome:

I read a story on a Dutch news site; this particular story was about time limits on games in China: After three hours, the player has fewer options for their character. Gamers, who play longer than five hours, see the options for their characters shrink to an absolute minimum. The player can use his character fully again after a break of at least five hours.

The government of China is testing these time limits on some popular games like: World of Warcraft, The World of Legend and The Legend of Mir 3. All the online game operators have said that they will add those time limits in their games, which isn't surprising at all, because without a license of the Chinese government the operators can't exist. The Chinese government hopes that the system will be fully functional somewhere in 2006.

In my opinion this is a very good solution to the game addiction of many people, only the die-hards play more than 5 hours, so the 'normal' gamers wouldn't be affected. This column is a perfect sequel to the previous column of ohaire...

More then twenty million Chinese people play games on a regular base. They play the most in an internet cafe. The Gaming industry in China is a good running business, last year more than 500 million dollar was spend on online gaming. A negative thing about that is that a lot of young people get addicted to online gaming... In the beginning of this year, a Chinese gamer killed another gamer because of an online cybersword, also a young Korean died because of playing Starcraft more than 50 hours.

If it seems to be working, they should make such a time limit in every game, at least, in my opinion.

If this happens wouldnt it be unfair? like surely people know when to stop and have a rest, and it will be on only some games.. when they get capped wouldnt they just play somethink diff?

I won't be bothered if they start w the time limit thing. Maybe its a good tool for parents with nerdy kids?

I think the Korean kids actually played for 90 hours, and not 50. both figures are completely out of my world to say the least...

"If you sleep you cant sin" - maybe we should send a few copies over to North Korea to keep 'em busy:)

Back when I was building/running a NwN PW server, I became concerned about the health of some of the players that where on there chronicly. I'd seen people go for 24 hours straight!

I came up with a script that tracked a player's time in-game. It made a minor comment after 3 hours. At 5 hours, it made a more serious comment. At 8 hours it kicked you out. If you tried to re-connect, all you got was a message saying "get some sleep, go eat something, GO OUTSIDE!" and re-set the ban-clock. It would only alow you back in after 8 hours had passed without you attempting to connect.

            The kicker?
It didn't take long for a couple players to start attempting to remotely crash the server to remove their time-bans.

Re: Games to be time capped

                Yeah.
The script was removed later on because it caused some issues for admins and I wasn't around to make the ajustments.

The server still exists, although I haven't been involved in it for more than a year.
If anyone's remotely interested, the webpage can be found here: http://www.thain.org/
The server requires Never Winter Nights + all the expansions, but no further content.

                        Nope.
As head admin, I had set a fairly nasty policy about abusing admins.

There was litterally, a very special place in hell for 'em.

The couple players that attempted to remotely crash the server were dealt with siwftly and harshly. We contacted their ISPs and had them disconnected.
                        Permanantly.

I really dont like the idea that some admin decides how much gaming is 'good' for me thank you very much. The decision whether I game for 3 or 30 hours is mine. While I cannot imagine playing *anything* for more than 2 hours myself, I dont think that decision should be made by the government or admin. Where do you stop from there? How many big macs I eat will be monitored next? how many soda's I drink? Give me a break. Besides, the true addicts *will* find ways around this.
