    Artillery

I've noticed a lot of people don't want to be in a group in bf2 because you attract artillery.
One artillery strike can kill an entire squad. I think this contributes in part to the lack of proper squads and teamwork.

One way to fix this would be to have the artillery user controlled, but the commader gives them targets. This would make the artillery less accurate and deadly. For this idea, there could be a third person view if you are using the arty, and you have a brids eye view of the map, but can't see any enemies and targets pointed out by the commander appear as red dots. there would also be an arc to show the trajectory and landing area of your shots.
Or, we could just have a longer pause before the commander can use it again.

    Agree?
    Disagree?

    Other solutions?

Hmm well you could always find cover.
And have a medic on your squad?

Flag that just went gray = artillary target

Commander doesn't need artillary, and I agree, make it user controlled. BF1942 had it right, don't see why they took a step backwards with it. Would also encourage people to defend.

If you are in a squad and are capping a flag, by the time the commander sees that the falg had gone grey you should be out of there already. Because of the delay of the arty a squad that stays on the move or doesn't step on each others toes when defending, most of the squad should survive any arty encounter.

If you have at least 3 guys at the flag, you can cap it in under 10 seconds--about the time it takes for the arty to even start dropping. Do what my clan does: neutralize the flag, then run like little girls for about 10 seconds. If no C4 detonates or artillery drops, send in a martyr to finish off the flag. Even if he dies, the rest can rush in and finish it off.

That's one of the absolute main reasons I hate the artillary in Battlefield 2 is you KNOW commanders look for turning flags, so people don't even bother defending and go looking for more points from a flag cap. It's just flags, back and forth, and skill-less point-and-click artillary takes a huge amount of blame for this. I don't care if you have 1 or 50 people in a flag cap radius, there's absolutely no one left defending over half your team's flags in Battlefield 2 because they know as soon as they get it, they have about 15 seconds to be clear before it rains artillary. It's detrimental to gameplay and thought processes involved in battle, hands down. This coupled with the useless ranking system drive people to goto more flags for more points, means flags are useless in the game and mean nothing more to a lot of players than continuous exchanges for more points.

And BigBadBob, I agree. Player driven artillary is exponentially better than the automated n00b-cannons BF2 has handed us. Nothing will replace having to fire the things yourself and having to have a teammate in most situations to assist in spotting. Long live the 109.

                          Re: Artillery

Sound is your ally. I've been accused of hacking due to my nack for avoiding arty with seconds to spare. If you hear it firing in the distance and it's not your team's arty (look at map), then think about where you are: are there many friendlies around? Are you at a flag that's under attack? Are you capping a flag?

The number 1 giveaway for arty coming to you is this, though: enemy vehicles staying at a suspisous distance from you-almost like they can see a red icon on their map...

I've often saved my squad by warning them of incoming arty over teamspeak.

Having said that, I do feel the arty in the previous games worked better.

My ka-freakin' tip for avoiding Arty:

                            Avoid crowds
If you are taking over a flag, get ready to run the second you cap it.
Listen! You can hear the whistle if you try. And listen for the shots of the arty guns. If you hear them, tell your team to get out. "Go, go, go!"

oh yea. I was a sniper with the howies. The Battle of 73 Beatings (Easting) dug in at the center flag, just blasting them as soon as they appeared. Got kicked from a few servers because they didn't think it could be used like a tank could.

Also, ever see an M-1974 Anti-Helo (and sometimes bomber) Howitzer?

Ahh, the good old days. Where skill meant something.
