tried flyin helos with a dual shock---****in nightmare, the analogue controllers are not sensitive enough, they dont give enough tactile feedback. what im trying to say is that its really hard to hold small movements on the analogue stick on the dual shock, something that you need for hekos. not tried a jet though, could be ok.

what i do is use mouse/keyboard for ground, a ps2 looking gamepad for tanks and cars, and a joystick for jets/heli's. that configuration is awesome.

it's personal preference though. to me, it's a pain in the a$$ to aim with a gamepad.
