The Joys of Using an Analog Controller (w/ Diagram)

I have tried several keyboard configurations/joystick combos and all the like, and none have felt as comfy as the dual analog controller made by Saitek. The Saitek P2500 is veery similar to a PS2 Controller the only main difference is instead of having Quadruple triggers on top, the P2500 on has two triggers on top, but replaces the two buttons on the actual keypad. I used Saiteks programming software and set up the right analog stick as a mouse, and the R1 button as the mouse click(which also designates firing). All the other keys remain as they would in the game such W moved you forward, but i program the controller so the left analog up is W. Sprint will still make you run fast, but programmed the controller to recognize L1 as Sprint. you get the picture. This allows for any buttons not covered on the controller to still be used without touching the options in the actual game. I have found this controller setup to be excellent for flight in Helos, allowing to drop that helo down whereever you want. AS far as first person mode goes, it it exactly like playing a PS2 FPS. IMHO, the greatest part about playing with a dual analog control is the comfort. Your not hunched over your desk with keyboard/joystick/mouse all in tow. I can relax in my big leather office chair and lean back and let the controller do the work for me without barely going to the keyboard. Heres a Diagram to show what i am talking about.

I might as well be the first to say it...
    :dead:
    :shakehead
Gamepads blow for general use in any FPS.
Learn ta use a mouse and you might start getting good at the game. I've seen people who swear by game pad get reasonbly skilled... but they will never equal a good mouser.

Stick with the standard WASD + mouse. It's tough to get used to if you're coming from a gamepad background, but eventually you'll find yourself making posts like this one.

I'm of the exact opposite opinion, OP. I'd play more console games if I could use a keyboard and mouse. Well, I don't actually use a keyboard, I use this:

but you get the picture. By the way, Wargimp, that's what I think of when I hear the word "gamepad".

        Hey! A fellow Nostromo fan!
I've got an earlier version, but I've loved it for years.

Side note, there is a very good reason that keyboards (or keyboard like devices) and mice are banned from all Halo tournaments. It's consitered and unfair advantage.

That should tell ya something right there!

Nostromo n52 + mouse all the way

No matter how you try...there is NO way you're ever gonna convince most of us that playing an FPS with a gamepad is a good idea.

Some people gets convinced the gamepad is good for FPS only because they play a lot of consol games. In consol games everyone uses gamepad so when everyone sucks, using the gamepad dosnt seem that limiting. When competing with mousers though gamepads are way off.

Example, say you want to shoot that guy far away. It takes him very litle effort to make sure the tiny iron sight is on your head, while you are desperately trying to adjust your gamepad to line up your sight. You MIGHT still succeed, but you would be dead by then.

Gamepad for FPS are for games like Halo IMO, where you only need to aim in general direction to score a hit, not in BF2.

Now using gamepad to fly the jet is another story, anyone tried that?

I dont see the advantage at all in using this for FPS.
If you have been playing nintendo, ps, ps2, xbox etc all time until you were introduced to a comp and bf2, then I might see how it would make you better... the first month:)

Consider the fact that while for infantry combat it's horrible, an analog controller would be sweet for flying and maybe even tanks.

you cant aim as fast as you do with the mouse with your game thing.

I'd like to have a try at flying jets/helos with one though, I reckon it would be a buttload sweeter

I wouldnt mind one for racing games too
