    Helicopter Help!

    Hey All

I heard that we have a couple ppl that are good at aircraft (planes and helicopters).

Here is the deal ... I have been playing a lil on a created Local Server. The sole purpose was to get me training on flying aircraft and manuevering Vehicles w/o getting blown up. hahaa.

After trying to be a Master Pilot w/ the keyboard and mouse I found that it might be fun to try it with a joystick (I had never owned one). So, after some research, I went out and got a Saitek Cyborg Evo. After configuring the joystick for aircraft and choppers I began practicing. I found that after a lil practice I'm getting pretty good at the Planes. I think that will just be a continual practice with regard to technique and speed control.

ANYWAY ... that isn't my issue at the moment. What I would really like to be able to do is fly a Helicopter well (Blackhawk to be specific). I read a post talking about chopper tactics. The first one I was excited about was "Hovering". It was basically stated that if I just went up on throttle/torque then I would go straight up and hover as long as i don't hit any pitch. This didn't work for me. When I up throttle (with joystick) i begin to rise and go forward. I've also heard it said that when going forward or back wards that by discontinuing pitching (letting go of the keys/stick) I should begin to hover again. This isn't happening. I'm being forced to correct and I am messing up badly.

I feel like everything is too sensitve w/ regard to pitch. I have my sensitivity all the way down on Choppers but still don't feel things are working as they should.

I would very much appreciate any help you ANYONE can give. I know it isn't supposed to be easy but I practiced for an hour just trying to stabilize to a hover and I could NOT get it. I was either pitched left or right too much or up and down too much.

SOOOO. To make a long story short ... should hover work as it was explained to me? How can I make my joystick/flying experience work so that I can at least become proficient (edit .con files??). I have no problem w/ practice practice practice but I feel something is a bit off, ESPECIALLY since I can't get the helo to hover at all. ha.

    ANY Help is much appreciated.

The only thing I can recommend is Practice, practice, Practice! Helos are sensitive and it is so worth it to learn them as I score way more points than in jets.

I use a Saitek as well, but for Jets only, and I'm not much of an aviator.

However, Helos are vehicle #1 for me, and all of my flying is done with KB and Mouse. I have a couple clanamtes that do use the stick for helos, but only sticks that 'twist' - giving them tail rotor control.

If you're willing to give kb/mouse a shot, I can help a bit... I find hovering fairly easy, I basically pull up to a spot and am usually pulling 'back' on the throttle, once u hit your spot pull back on the mouse a bit to tilt the nose up and stop the helo. From here, its basically a balance of having your pitch (nose) tilted at the right spot so that the helo sits still without pulling forward or rolling back. Don't more side to side, and maybe some minimal throttle could be used. If you get it perfect, you can leave both hands off the kb :)

Most of your manuvers come down to the pitch/yaw of the main rotor. Example - swinging it hard to one side will pull the helo off to a side, where you can then straighen out the helo, use the momentum created, and use the tail rotor to work yourself in a strafe circle position...

This is the key. I have a Logitech and you must have a joystick that twist to give the tail a rotate. I fly with a joystick for all my air vehicles now. I am about 98% better now. Of course this is coming from a BF:1942 and Desert player.

Yeah ... my Saitek does twist and I have it mapped for Rudder control. I guess maybe I just need to figure out the right sensitivity and touch. Any thoughts on that. I guess the guy that mentioned auto hovering was mistaken ...ya think?

It'd be fun to get somebody to join your server and fly with you and give you pointers while in the air.

That's how I help my friends with their flying.

If you just take off - do not touch the stick, only use throttle - you should go up to a hover - if it starts to pitch and roll etc - you need to calibrate your joystick, something is off.

As for flying - then going into a hover - you will need to make subtle adjustments for hover.

It does come down to practice and getting the feel of it down.

I agree with The_Misfit. Use KB+Mouse for helos. You need the quick turning of the joystick for the planes. Helos require more fine tuning, especially for attack choppers. Trust us: you just need more practice with KB+Mouse for helos. The payoff is immense.

hey there are some joysticks that shake so mabe his does it

but for jets i use a joystick and helis i use keyboard for steering and my throotle piece for the throotle
cause my stick and throotle are seperate
                    so ya
i hate it cause u cant leave they throttle in one place u either slow down and u have to keep pressing the button it sucks

Does anyone know where I can calibrate my joystick (Saitek Cyborg Evo). Is it in control pannel or else where? Thanks again ... all of this stuff is very affirming b/c I thought I was just at a complete loss.

Did you install the Saitek software? My x-52 came with software that you can calibrate it seperate from the game.

otherwise - go into control panel -> gaming controllers - then properties of the stick - should be able to calibrate there. That is how I used to calibrate my logitech
