I Hesitate to Help Fellow Pilots Out

Before I begin, I know that there is a lot of Pilot/Jet haters so I'm already prepared for you to flame me to so....whatever.

But anyway, It occurred to me whilst flying in Oman and Wake today that I hesitate to try and clear fellow pilots tail's.

And Why? Because the A2A missiles are just as crap as the Stinger/IGLA missiles are. Twice today whilst trying to clear a friends tail earlier. My missiles got within metres of the enemy aircraft it was aimed at, it then decided it would miss the enemy and zoom after my friendly, and make some damage

It sucks for one, some of the friendly pilots think I'm being a jerk, and start throwing abuse in my direction when they get the chance.

So pilots what should I do go after the enemy with cannon and the occasional missile? Or just ignore the situation and carry on with what ever I was doing?

By the way I have been flying for a while and this just recently occurred to me, so opinions please, and don't say "Get out of the plane and use a gun you wuss".

I know how you feel. You can get a good lock on an enemy aircraft that is chasing a friendly, then watch as the missles fly past it and slam into the back of your teammate. All you get for your trouble is -4 points and a bit of rage.

If you want to help your teammate, then just lock onto the enemy, but don't shoot. Hopefully the buzzing in his cockpit will scare him into breaking off his attack.

I dont think people really hate planes......(the ones that say they do). They simply hate the fact that in almost all reality, there is no defense system against them. Just as you said, the missles on the planes are worthless as AA, heatseekers, the same as they are from stationary AA on the ground. Even the linebackers suffer from this. You can over and over, shoot a full payload of 5 Heatseekers from a linebacker.......and even, with target locked, fail to land a single one of them. Thats simply not acceptable. And, is why most people hate planes. OOOPS! i did it myself. I dont hate planes/pilots, i hate that i have a 30% chance of even hitting one, much less taking one out, from the ground.

True I agree, when I'm playing on the ground or in a vehicle on a plane dominated map, I get annoyed when I get blown up all the time, but if you think on a 64 player server if every player on the opposite team had a 30% chance of hitting an aircraft its likely that planes are going to get shot down, this is why I serously object to infantry having stingers or Ground to Air missles, like in JO/JOE.

The only way I have been taking out a plane is by sticking on his ass while in bomb mode and then switching to A2A and fireing before locked.
Works most of the times as the missles have nowhere else to go (for a change).

That's what I'm going to have to do. I was chasing a MEC bomber on Oman last night.. He should have had his last rights issued.. Flying perfectly straight, right behind him at a decent range, solid lock tone for several seconds. He was either lining up for some armor or going after our attack chopper. I let loose my salvo of 3 missles.. First two go right by him and hit our Cobra, killing it, and who knows where the third went. Sigh.

And I've gotten more Team Vehicle Damage points than I care to count when helping my own bomber out on other maps. Need to just hang on to the missles and use the guns. Maybe the lock tone and tracers will scare him off.

Yes I do this, but I don't know about you lot but when i hear the lock tone on me I drop flares and try to evade. It can work, but like minded pilots just pull a manouvere

Funny thing, last night I was middle man in this senario, I was chasing down a target trying to get a good shot, when I heard the warning bells of someone on my butt. I saw both his missles fly by me and take out his own guy.....kind of ****ed me off, I was just toying with him and missed out on the kill. It was still funny hearing them flame each other as a result though.

The trick to this is patience. I usually like to follow my targets in the bomber hud so that their alarm doesn't alert them that I am behind whoever I am following. When they slow down, or level out thats when I let loose the air to air missles. If that fails, I just repeat the process over again. If you're really good at tailing, get close enough and gun em down in the bomber hud. A few rounds into the engine will take it out soon. When you need to get another fighter off your wingman's tail just scare him off by locking on to him and then deal with him once you're buddy is safe. A couple cannon rounds never hurt either.

Re: I Hesitate to Help Fellow Pilots Out

You have to understand that the victim (the teammate) is mad that the TKer (you) "attacked him without warning or due cause". The real fault lies in the programming. If the AA turret missiles or AA jet missiles were properly programmed, you wouldn't get any flak. Alas, when your teammate gets hit/killed and the only name associate with such a heinous act is a teammate, he equates the situation to a malicious act of treason and you deserve a ban.

I agree with the general concensus of locking them w/o firing and picking at them with cannon fire. If I see a good angle on my target I may squeeze off a missle or two... all depends on the situation. More often than not though, it results in team dmg if it misses. :|

As a jet hater (but not necessarily a jet PILOT hater) I am pretty experienced with how the AA missiles work, and I guess indirectly the jet missles, it annoys the crap out of me when the idiots punish since it already a pretty well known fact that you can't intentionally lock onto a friendly. Assuming the jet missles work the same way.
